Considering returning new F4-212

I purchased an f4-212 after seeing it recommended on YouTube to replace an old DLink NAS.

I particularly wanted it to run Plex as a media station, and for general file storage. I use Linux (ZorinOS which is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS).

I installed an Seagate IronWolf, 8TB drive.

Firstly the advertised Linux support is severely lacking. Downloaded TNAS PC for Ubuntu 5.1.73 and tried to install it, all I get is a black rectangle
Image

Support for Linux is seemingly non-existent. Help tells me what to do for Windows and Mac, despite the NAS running linux itself.

Copying files to the device using CP gives me lots of "Input/output error". I'm getting "device full" when there is 7TB free. eg. -

Code: Select all

cp: error reading '/mnt/Volume_1/MEDIA/TV/4400/The 4400 Season 1 Complete/The 4400 S01E03 - Becoming.avi': Input/output error
Which gives me no confidence about data security.

Do I struggle on or do I just return it?

Hello!
1. Currently, TNAS PC merely supports the utilization of Windows and MAC, and does not support the employment of Linux systems for the time being;
2. Regarding the error when using cp to copy files, could you show us the screenshot? I'm not certain about what you are doing. TNAS 5.1.73 enables file uploading, copying, and other related operations.

Here's a screenshot of the error.

I downloaded TNAS for Ubuntu from here -

I'm very sorry! We will test and verify the issue you reported. The main function of TNAS PC for Linux is to search for TNAS devices within the network. If the client is temporarily unavailable, please access it through hostname.local or by entering the TNAS IP address in your browser.

Is it possible to install alternative NAS software on the F4-212?
I see guides saying to load the software on the internal USB drive, but I don't see one inside.

Hello, the F4-212 is an ARM type system, which can only be installed on a hard disk and has no internal USB.

You could try Open Media Vault I saw that had arm support at some level. I don't use Arm, so I can't tell you more.
Any (usb) port in a storm. :)

So basically, the F4-212 isn't capable of running the lastest version of TOS.
The Linux application doesn't work at all.
Copying files to it gives errors.
Support is lacking. (See other threads on here).
The version of PLEX that can be installed using TOS is out of date, so Plex tells me.

I have started the return process.
