Moving from F4-210 to F5-221 problem

Post by relaxa »

I'm trying to upgrade to a F5-221. After first checking this thread viewtopic.php?t=3306 I thought it would be a simple case of swapping over my drives, powering on and all will be well; as has happened every time I've gone up the F4 models.

No luck this time though. When I switch it on it beeps a couple of times but then there is no LAN light on and TNAS doesn't detect the device.

When I pull the drives out and run it empty then TNAS detects it no problem.

I've put a test blank drive in and it initiates fine; but put my old drives in and, nothing. I put the drives back in the F4 and it all runs fine.

Anyone have any idea if I've missed something obvious?

I've got everthing backed up but I really, really don't want to wipe everthing and start from scratch if I can possibly avoid it.

Help!

You cannot transition from an ARM series device (the 210) to a ×86/×64 series device (the 221) by simply moving HDDs; the new device needs to be setup as new and you'll need to migrate the data from the 210 over your network via rsync to the 221 or by copying it to an external drive on the 210 & then contact that external drive to the 221, placing it where you'd like it in the 221.

The person in that linked thread was moving from a 220 to 221 (both ×86/×64), which is why it just worked for them.

Yep, that's what I was afraid of. A couple of days work ahead of me then.

I'm technically ready for the job but not necessarily mentally ready.

Wish me luck!

The response from criticizing is correct. You cannot directly replace the hard drive. You can insert the F4-210 drive into F5-221 and then reinstall the system. To reinstall the system, you can refer to this link: viewtopic.php?t=423

Have you updated the firmware on both the F4-210 and F5-221 to the latest versions? While you've mentioned that the F5-221 recognizes a blank drive, try using a different drive from the F4-210.
