[Discussion] Experiences upgrading F6-424 from TOS 6 to TOS 7?

Post by jollino »

Hi all, my history with TNAS has been: F4-424 with TOS 5 => Upgraded F4-424 to TOS 6 => Moved the disks to F6-424 => Added more disks to F6-424 (there was a little problem with the migration where TOS wouldn't recognize it as TRAID+, solved by support via remote access). This is the "old" model, not the Max one.

So far everything works well. I have a couple of users, several shared folders, a couple of Docker containers, a custom script running via crontab, and Surveillance recording my cameras.

Note that a while back I had to change a memory setting in the BIOS (disabling the SAGV option) because it kept crashing randomly after installing the official TerraMaster 16 GB RAM. It took days of waiting for the array to be scrubbed after every crash, and then running memtest86+. It wasn't exactly pleasant.

I'm currently running TOS 6.0.794-01324, and it's suggesting to update to TOS 7.

If I do upgrade to TOS 7, should I expect any issues? I've read about all sorts of problems with other devices and while I'm aware that it's generally a vocal minority complaining, I'm not entirely sure I could deal with things not working, especially as it's in an inconvenient place so even connecting a monitor would be a bit of a mess. To be completely honest, the fact that TOS7 marketing material leans heavily towards "AI features" is actually a reason for me _not_ to update, but then again I will eventually lose on security updates.

Any feedback would be most welcome.

Thanks!

Memory test errors are usually related to the SA GV feature enabled in the BIOS. This feature can affect the compatibility of third-party memory under certain conditions, causing errors during testing. Disabling the SA GV feature in the BIOS settings can improve compatibility with third-party memory. For the F6-424, the upgrade to TOS 7 does not require any additional adjustments — you can upgrade directly by uploading the update package to 7.0.0747.
