[Help] I have 2 F5-221 devices but only 1 will update to TOS7 [SOLVED]
[Help] I have 2 F5-221 devices but only 1 will update to TOS7
I have 2 F5-221 NAS devices. I have successfully installed TOS7 on the older device but the newer one will not boot after attempting to install TOS7. I have opened up both units to see what differences there are and here is what I know so far:
Older NAS
1) Older unit has a sticker on the "motherboard" stating TM-J3355-2G2L V2.0 and another sticker with 000-F5221-FBA008-0001
2) Older unit has a MAPL0304V16 BIOS
3) Older unit has no additional RAM
4) Successfully upgraded to TOS7 392
Newer NAS
1) Newer unit has a sticker stating TM-J3355-2G2L V3.0 and another sticker with 000-F5221-FBA002-2000
2) Newer unit has a MAPL0304V22
3) New unit has a 2GB RAM chip installed for 8 months without issue
4) will not re-boot when upgrading to TOS7 392 (tried using both .ins and .bz2 methods over 10 times).
Any idea why the older one works and the newer one doesn't???
Thank you, Chad Henderson (ChadH42)

Hello,
It seems your new F5-221 has about 2GB of newly added RAM, right? If so, you can try the following three methods:
1. First, upgrade to the latest TOS 7.0.0403 system version and see if it restores normal operation;
2. Try the following guide to set it up and see;

3. If methods 1 and 2 still don't work, you can try removing the newly added 2GB of RAM and then try again.

My experience with added sodimm module on "newer" -221 is that the top edge of the module can foul against the ribs of the case panel. Either loosen the panel screws and/or shave the edges of the case ribs to ensure the sodimm module fits correctly.your new F5-221 has about 2GB of newly added RAM, right?

Re: [Help] I have 2 F5-221 devices but only 1 will update to TOS7
Based on the information from these two devices, their relevant configurations should theoretically be the same. You can try logging into the BIOS of the newer F5-221 device to check if the BIOS boot order is correct. Additionally, you could install the hard drive containing the TOS7 system from the older F5-221 device into the newer F5-221 device and see if it boots successfully.

Re: [Help] I have 2 F5-221 devices but only 1 will update to TOS7
I tried moving the hard drives from the older NAS, after it did upgrade to TOS7, into the new NAS and it would not boot. I tried updating the new NAS drives in the old NAS chassis and it would not boot. This is REALLY strange!TMjack wrote: ↑15 Feb 2026, 20:48 Based on the information from these two devices, their relevant configurations should theoretically be the same. Removed the 2GB RAM chip from new NAS and having the same problem. Moved 2GB RAM from new to old NAS and it installed TOS7 fine on old!! I am more confused!!OrionXie wrote: ↑15 Feb 2026, 13:13Hello,

Hello, I would like to inquire whether the newer F5-221 device is equipped with an HDMI interface? If it is, you could conveniently connect it to an HDMI monitor to view the specific output details. Additionally, you might also try creating a bootable USB drive to troubleshoot the issue. For detailed instructions, please refer to this link.

Re: [Help] I have 2 F5-221 devices but only 1 will update to TOS7
The HDMI idea has helped tremendously. I learn that in the re-boot after installing TOS7 the BIOS returns to "boot from INIT" state It is "boot from RAID" state on the working NAS. After checking the Boot Sequence in the BIOS settings, it lists 3 Sata drives as boot devices. None of them are the drives that TOS7 was installed on. I changed the boot order during the re-boot and TOS7 started!!TMjack wrote: ↑16 Feb 2026, 09:04 Hello, I would like to inquire whether the newer F5-221 device is equipped with an HDMI interface? Update: The next and subsequent re-boots fail & keeps going back to "boot from INIT"ChadH42 wrote: ↑17 Feb 2026, 01:45The HDMI idea has helped tremendously.
