Motion detection fails

Hi. I do have motion detection source set to Camera. It continues to record continuously. If the application records continuously, what effect does motion detection have - I continue to see the same recordings as when the source is disabled.

Like other applications, isn’t the whole point of motion event based recording to only record when there is a motion event?

Currently, our motion detection mechanism extracts motion events from recorded footage. If the recording is not continuous, events may be missed—which is clearly not ideal. We will optimize this in the future.

Ideally, motion detection should trigger recording only when movement is detected. This ensures that important events are captured while avoiding unnecessary continuous recording, which consumes excessive storage space.

By the way, the current motion detection events can be viewed in "Logs > Event Logs", where you can also quickly review the corresponding footage.

Sorry if I am confused, but isn't receiving the ONVIF events to relieve the Surveillance Manager from doing motion detection. I should just receive the event and record with the set before and after window.

Perhaps there is a more fundamental issue. Per the video below, no events are being captured:

Any additional troubleshooting info is appreciated.

Judging from your video, the camera settings appear to be correctly configured, and the camera itself is also recording motion events. However, the absence of motion detection recordings is quite unusual. We have released a new version that includes optimizations in this area. You may try updating to see if it resolves the issue. If the problem persists, you can schedule an appointment with a technical engineer to help locate the cause.
Additionally, would you mind letting me know the brand and model of your camera? This will help us improve compatibility testing in the future.

I indeed tried the updated application with no luck. One thing I'm still confused about, does the application support this use case: Only recording when motion detection at the camera is triggered (ie. there is an ONVIF event message). If so, it is unclear what settings would enable that.

The camera I am using is TP-Link TAPO C120. FWIW, I have set up and am using Shinobi now and it is able to perform that use case. I would prefer to use the Surveillance Manager App so I look forward to it supporting this.

Currently, motion events can only be extracted from all recorded videos, meaning it's not yet possible to record only motion events. We already have plans to implement this feature and kindly ask for your patience. Thank you for your understanding.

I would say that motion detection is a pretty basic feature to be expected from any surveillance software in 2026. It makes the difference between having to record 24/7 at like 3gb an hour, equaling to 72gb a day, as opposed to your actual usage. Especially not that storage is getting more expensive I would say it's even more vital.
To be honest I didn't even check if Tos supported this because it seemed like such an obvious feature to have, after all, Netcam studio, which runs in the background on my windows pc can do it.

I'm not sure if an entire feasibility study is needed either. ONVIF cameras are already designed that they can tell you that an event has occurred, "all" the surveillance software has to do is pick up that signal and record the event +- a certain amount of seconds.

Is this something covered in TOS7?
