[Discussion] F8NAS HEAT ISSUE M2 FIX

Post by zeichstein »

I was having issue with my memory modules getting to hot. and my array being degraded.
I have found that the 1.4 modules show 118F no matter what fan setting is used.

On auto fan, modules 1-3 (all 1.4) units were at 118F., module 4 is a 1.3 series and was at 114F.
Putting fan on full lowered the 1.3 module to 86F but the others stayed at 118F.

I adjusted the fan to always on full and it lowered the temp of the 1.3 module that shows the correct temperature.
I believe the auto fan setting does not work since it is reading a M2 chip that is always reporting 118F.
Since the change all is well with my nas.

Hopefully Terramaster will address the temp reading issue in an update.

For an SSD, 118°F (47.8°C) is well within normal operating range. Most SSDs can safely operate up to 158°F (70°C). This means cooling fans don’t need to run at full speed for an SSD at 118°F. Regarding '1.3, 1.4' – could you clarify if this refers to numerical ranges (e.g., 1-3, 1-4)? Also, may I ask the brand and model of your SSD?

let me restate more clearly
slot 1-3 have NVMe version 1.4 memory modules that all slots "report' 118F no matter what their temperature is.
slot 4 has a NVMe version 1.3 module that reports the correct temperature.

The auto fan function apparently does not use slot 4 for its calculation for target fan speed.

modules 1-3 are;
LEVEN JPS600 4TB PCIe Without Dram Read Speed Up to 3000 MB/s NVMe Internal SSD(Solid State Drive)-Gen3x4 M.2 2280 QLC 3D NAND
but the mane on the top says "LARES"
sn c2525c6c12041516110
firmware: VHOO1C3F
VERSION: 1.4

MODULE 4 IS: TEAM "SOMETHING....removed label to mount heat sinks
firmware: VB421D65
VERSION: 1.3
My problem is resolved, just sharing to help the group and hopefully allow the developed to refine their auto fan logic.

I am going to guess that the Version numbers you are quoting are the firmware versions of each product and have little relevance.
I notice that, for the Leven product you quote, their detailed specs do NOT state "Linux" as a covered operating system.

{AS an (?)interesting(?) aside, I also noted
strict quality control standards which are certified by SGS
- SGS being a company I worked for, for many years in several countries. Interesting thing about that quote is that it is the "system" that is certified, not the "product". It has been said (and I paraphrase) that if you design a set of concrete water wings and build them to those designs precisely and observe quality procedures throughout, they will meet the required standard for certification. It does not matter if you sink while wearing them!}

Hello, regarding the fan speed adjustment mechanism in the TOS system, let me explain in detail:

The fan speed is primarily adjusted based on the highest temperature detected among the M.2 SSDs in the device and is not related to the physical slot position of the drive.

Based on your feedback, we suspect that the system may be encountering errors when reading the temperature of the NVMe 1.4 SSD, which could be related to the firmware (FW) version of the NVMe drive.

To further troubleshoot the issue, you can try installing this NVMe 1.4 SSD on a Windows system to check whether its temperature can be read accurately.
