SMB performance with small files is lower than AFP

Hello all,
I've had a F4-423 for a few months and I'm generally quite happy with it. However, I noticed a strange behavior with SMB compared to AFP.

My main machine is a Mac Mini and I'm using the latest macOS version. With SMB, after some tweaks, I get fast folder listings and big files transfer at full speed. Smaller files, however, seem to take a while compared to AFP.
I'm aware that small files require more overhead regardless of medium, but it's surprising how much faster AFP behaves. When moving many small files via the Finder — e.g. a folder with 250 images, all less than 1 MB in size — in both cases it will pre-allocate the space on the NAS, which takes about the same time. Then AFP will transfer the files in a couple of seconds, while SMB takes a lot longer; it's as if SMB starts and stop for every file.

I know that Apple's re-implementation of Samba is notoriously mediocre, but they've made it clear that AFP is deprecated and support for it is going to be removed at some point, so I'd like to tune my SMB connections as much as possible.

I'd be most thankful if anyone could suggest anything that I may have overlooked!

I just upgraded TOS to 6.0.530, and I'm in the process of reconfiguring everything. However, I noticed that AFP is completely gone and SMB (at least with the default settings) is incredibly slow. Then, out of the blue, the NAS just stopped responding over the network; my router still shows the same IP and I hadn't changed it, so I have no idea what happened. Not sure if I should just wait or attempt a forced reboot.

Well, it seems to become unresponsive as soon as I try to open a folder via SMB. This is pretty bad...

Hello, can you forget to update the SMB connection credentials before and re-enter the user name and password to connect SMB to TNAS? You can try to clear the SMB cache and reconnect.

Hi TMcola, I opened up a bug report at viewtopic.php?t=6959 — I am going to update that one as I may have just figured out the cause. Sorry for the "instinctive" post here but as you may imagine it was quite a bummer. Hopefully I sorted it out and I can report what's causing the problem; it's unrelated to credentials. I'll post more on the other side. In the meantime, on this topic I can say that the SMB performance with small files is the same as before. :(

Hi,

I'm struggling with the same frustrating issue of poor SMB performance on macOS. I recently bought a brand-new Mac Mini with 10GbE and directly connected it to my F8 Plus NAS. However, copying small files is painfully slow—sometimes it feels like it takes days! The max speed I’m seeing is around 250 MB/s, which is far below what I expected.

Honestly, I’m considering returning the F8 Plus, as it feels like NAS marketing overpromises and underdelivers. Has anyone found a reliable fix or workaround for SMB speed issues on macOS?

Hello! We'd like to know if your TNAS device is currently running a TOS system version lower than 6.0.610? Additionally, could you please share the actual transfer speed you're experiencing when using SMB copy? It's worth mentioning that TOS version 6.0.610 has significantly improved and optimized the transfer speed for SMB small files.
