Guide 48GB RAM in F8 SSD Plus works great!

Post by anuraj1 »

I installed a 48GB DDR5 SODIMM (Corsair CMSX48GX5M1A4800C40) in my F8 SSD Plus and everything is working as expected. Just wanted to post this in case anyone wanted to try the same thing. The max listed in TM documentation is 32GB.

I don't know, I'm just enjoying tinkering right now since it's my first NAS :D

I ended up installing Unraid last night and doing a pool of 8 ZFS SSDs. The extra RAM is great because Unraid runs in RAM and ZFS uses RAM.

Issuing a dmidecode command on my F8 SSD Plus device reports that up to 64GB is supported in theory. I can see there are 48GB SODIMM modules on the market, but I can't find anything of larger capacity.

I wonder can Terramaster confirm there there are no issues with a 48GB module? I'm reluctant to purchase an oversized module without some informal confirmation that it has a decent chance of success.

Code: Select all

dmidecode -t 16
# dmidecode 3.3

In the official parameter information released by Intel, this CPU supports up to 16GB RAM. 64GB is the maximum RAM that the motherboard system can support.
We found that 32GB of RAM is also supported after a long period of testing in our labs.
As for higher RAM capacity, we have not actually tested it for the time being. So we can't guarantee that 64GB RAM is available.

I don't think 64gb DDR5 SODIMMs have been released yet.

FWIW, the 48gb in my F8 SSD Plus is working really well.

Thanks for that report on the 48GB SODIMM. Based on your good experience I think I'll order the same SKU of 48GB module. 48GB opens up some interesting server applications with docker.

On a related topic, I've only had my F8 SSD Plus for a few days so still feeling my way around, I'm trying to figure how to configure more paging space (it has defaulted to only 2GB). Looks like the BTRFS file system doesn't support swapfiles :/

I really liked TOS6 but I ended up installing Unraid in order to get more features like you're looking for.

A quick update. Based on anuraj1 's good experience with a 48GB SODIMM modules, I purchased the same module and it works perfectly. Did a memtest which passed, and it's been running without issue for several days. Part Number: CMSX48GX5M1A4800C40. This really turns the little NAS box into a rather capable home server for me.

I've appended the memory module part of dmidecode information below:
