Not necessarily "duff" - I'm sure the forum support staff are given a list of "supported devices" by the back room tweekers. The latter probably just want to keep their own support workload down to a minimum with no care for what it may mean in the long run. (All conjecture, naturally}

Having done the 'clean install' of 6.0.500 twice now (first to prove a point and second to try and verify any shortcomings) It does seem that the default install does indeed (as muted elsewhere) pick up the latest version depending on the usb initboot (which was changed at 6.0.420 or thereabouts).

My queston now would be for the 'backroom' - if not on support list why PUSH the update to unsupported models as was done.

There still remains my problem of not updating due to mythical shortage of disk space. If this is truly due to 'lack of support' why not be up-front and give an appropriate warning?? I have no idea what the init/update system might be looking at to make the 'insufficient space' call.

F2-423 should be supported, too, I assume, after reading the list of supported devices here: viewtopic.php?t=6506
The TOS 6.0.500 Official Release requires TOS 6.0.420 or later, which would be the case with TOS 6.0.460.

Can I assume that all my data will remain as with a regular update?

Never assume anything ;) You may also presume too much. Despite that list, later there was a manufacturing date limit given for 221 models stating that earlier models were not compliant. Who knows? Just make backups to be safe.

So to update to official TOS 6, if we have devices running current official TOS5, we have to update to beta TOS6 firstly?

That is not entirely clear at the moment as it might depend on which model you have. You could always go to the main TM support > download pages. Enter your model details and see if there is an installation file for Tos6.0.500 (*.ins). That will at least indicate that your model is (currently) supported for TOS6 and you could backup your data and do a clean install.

I installed the update to 6.0.500 on my F4-423. While it fixed the date and time listing on the info page it broke Plex. It will not go to enabled. I reinstalled it and it still fails to enable.
Also it didn’t fix the UPS disconnect problem. Nice to have terminal access that seems to work fine.
