[Help] Looking for remote access solution: Tailscale?

Post by jestermgee »

Running a TNAS v6

I have a number of devices I remote access (such as CCTV system, computers etc) which I use to port forward via my router and DDNS resolve. This was all great until I switched to a new service provider using CGNAT which now makes remote access via fixed or DDNS impossible.

Some of my services such as Plex and Home Assistant have remote access using their own reverse proxy features but the important services I have (CCTV) have no such feature so I need to somehow be able to remotely access it.

I have looked into Tailscale and have it setup and configured as an Exit Node and believe I need to now also set it as a Subnet Router so I can use my TNAS as a way to access my other devices (which I cannot deploy Tailscale client).

I am looking to see if anyone has experience in this or can offer some advice? I have not been able to setup the Subnet Router as yet and am not even sure if this is the best way but I need to find a solution that does not rely on port forwarding.

A bit off topic, but have you asked your isp if they will provide standard nat routing OR a fixed IP address? I'm in the UK and my ISP (Gigaclear) uses CGNAT, but I pay a little extra (like £1-£2/month - need to look at bill!) for fixed IP. They offered standard nat for free. I went with the fixed IP for the convenience.

I appreciate the extensive information provided in this post regarding using Tailscale for remote access. I am curious how it handles diverse network setups while making connections. It appears critical, especially for users with diverse configurations. Also, have you seen any performance changes when comparing to competing solutions such as ZeroTier or OpenVPN? I am researching the best possibilities for a modest home lab setup and want to make an informed decision.
