[Help] D8 Hybrid Event ID 158, warning Disk has the same UniqueID

Post by mannyi31 »

Hello, I am having this issue where the HDD bay 1 & 2 share the same UniqueID in Windows and I would assume bay 3 & 4 does the same. Windows 11 does not like this and is causing issues when transferring data and having multiple random disconnects. This sounds like the same issue where the SSD's had the same ID's but there is a firmware available for Realtek that fixed it and I do not have the problem there as each SSD's are presented individually.

Is there a firmware update that can be applied to the HDD bay's ASMedia controller to present each drive with its own UniqueID? I could not find a firmware upgrade for the HDD bays on the D8 Hybrid.

Hello, the HDD1 and HDD2 slots of the D8 Hybrid are controlled by a single ASM chip for two SATA interfaces, so they will have the same UID. Therefore, it is recommended to create an array using the device's own knob for the HDD1 and HDD2 slots of the D8 Hybrid. HDD3, HDD4, and the four M.2 slots are all independent.

CursaYang, you are correct. HDD4 has its own UniqueID and I swapped the drive to that bay and Windows 11 stopped complaining. Thank you for the explanation.

Hi CursaYang, D8 Hybrid have 4 SATA slots/ports - 2 per ASM235C and 2 per ASM1352R. Also, each M.2 port/slot managed by RTL9220VA. Each chip have own FW. The duplicate UID issue for D8 exists with stock FW for all chipsets - 1 UID per ASM235C, 1 UID per ASM1352R and 1 UID for 4x RTL9220VA. The FW updates for resolving duplicates are available on TerraMaster forum only for viewtopic.php?t=6748 and for the similar chip into D4-320 , which is also applicable for D8 Hybrid (confirmed as resolving the duplicates) viewtopic.php?t=7111 . There is no updates for ASM1352R yet. After 2 FW updates - the fully populated DAS have 7 unique UIDs for 8 installed devices which is unacceptable for some applications, at least for Windows S2D. Please spend your time with L3 support and finally help community to resolve the disk's UID/Serial duplicate issue. I understand that the ASM1352R is RAID supported chip , but in "no RAID" configuration it should support for passing through the unique, hardware-based HDD serials. At least that is supported on devices, used the same ASM chip from other vendors. FYI - the ASM1352R used in D2-320 DAS and the same one UID exist in both available slots of this enclosure.

Whether it is the Slot1&2 of D8 Hybrid or the D2-320, they are all RAID controllers to SATA X2.

Is that just the statement - "RAID controller cannot passing through disk's IDs in the "single" mode"? If so, why the other vendor enclosure, the ASM1352R-based can do this? This is just the one positive example https://www.startech.com/en-eu/hdd/sdoc ... 1FRP_734hg

Perhaps they use the same chips as you mentioned, but it is clear that they differ greatly in terms of functional design direction.
If you really need a DAS that can read HDD serial numbers one-to-one, please try to choose a DAS model without RAID functionality as much as possible.
