[Help] Storage pool and volumes create but disappear

Post by Atreyu »

I have a F2-423 that has not had many issues with over the years. The main drives are 2 18tb drives that are working as they are supposed to.

I have been fighting with 2 8tb drives and a 12tb drive in an expansion that I have had for quite a while.
I have attempted multiple times to create pools and volumes (might be part of the issue)

As i have not had to fight with the issues, I am not sure how to access any type of log outside of the system event log.
I have looked at other posts but as a first time troubleshooter for these issues, I don't even know where to begin.

Several posts show a log from something that tracks all of the necessary information and any step in the right direction would be appreciated.

On a side note, one of the 8 tb was working just fine until I tried to add the other and everything went haywire.

Thank you in advance

You can view some relevant LVM records here: /etc/lvm/archive/

Regarding the issue you encountered, there are many potential influencing factors, which require troubleshooting to determine.
It is recommended that you generate and download the system report package in TOS Desktop > Technical Support > Report Issues, then download and send it to our support mailbox for inspection.

1. In addition to the native SATA HDD in F2-423, the HDDs in the two USB enclosures have also been added to the system partition. This might be due to your previous use of TOS5.
This may affect system stability. Please go to Control Panel - Disk - System Disk and remove the system partition for these USB enclosure HDDs.

2. Besides your 2-bay USB enclosure, there is another device that appears to be our 4-bay USB DAS product. What model is it? Is it the D4-320?

3. Regarding the 12T HDD you mentioned, it has generated some I/O errors. It is temporarily unclear whether this is due to poor contact, a slot issue, or a problem with the HDD itself.
Further observation is needed. We recommend that you try changing its position and testing it on a PC with professional disk tools.

4. The two new created storage pools inside the 4-bay DAS product have not successfully completed the entire creation process, and the cause is unknown.
You can try connecting it to a PC, clearing the partitions of the 4 HDDs, and then reconnecting it to F2-423 to attempt again.

The DAS is a D8 hybrid.

I will attempt to reset the das back to factory and then insert and format all disks again.

After reset and formatting, I attempted to use the 8tb drives together and the 12tb as a single.

The 8tb drives show the same issue warning as the HDD1 system drive warning.
Is it likely that is part of the issue? If it is, how would i address that without losing data

I did not remove the two 6tb drives from the system as i was not sure what partitions are required to be deleted to not lose any of the data on the drives.

Thank you again for your continued assistance.

Hello, we use SMART to test the hard disk. If the relevant values deviate from the normal range, a warning will be prompted.
You can click on the warning to view the specific items, and the related risk items will be displayed in the same orange color.
If it is not a critical error, you can ignore it and continue using the disks.

I have a question that might help with my current issue.

Due to me having the D8 Hybrid as the expansion of my NAS, Does it act as its own raid controller? If i set it to single mode for instance, then try to set up a volume in my NAS as a RAID-0 with 2 of those drives, will it conflict? Also if I set it as a Raid-0 mode on the das, will it force all drives in the das to assume that format?

The knob behind the D8 Hybrid controls the first two slots of the HDD bay. The other slots default to single mode and are unaffected. If you need to create a RAID on the NAS, please use hard drives in slots other than the first and second.
