[Help] APC UPS Support

Post by IDG »

I have been reading many posts about the UPS support but I'm confused.Could someone correct me if I'm wrong. After all the reading i see it as two choices.1 Have UPS support and have a graceful shut down of the TNAS but not being able to turn it self back on when power returns. 2 No ups support let it run until the batteries are dead and crash the TNAS, let it power it self back on and hope nothing is corrupt. If there is a third option please let me know.

APC devices can be configured using APC software or apcupsd, a freeware apc driver and tool (via a desktop usb connection or network login depending on type). The software that @TM use has very limited configuration out of the box (based on NUT) and quite probably would not interfere with firmware config in the UPS itself (but there is no guarantee that won't change). You also have options in the NAS bios (or should have) to set options for action on power restoration.

I tend to set mine to wait for battery to reach a given % before restoring power to devices. I set bios of each device as I need - usually 'turn on when power restored'. I let TNAS turn nas off as per setting in UPS config via control panel. I never let it run until battery depleted but set a sensible time limit which may vary depending on battery capacity (visible in TOS config when connection established) and devices using said UPS. This will allow for a quicker restart when power comes back.
