Gigabit LAN Dongles, USB

Hi all, I'm new to Terramaster and trying to finish my first install.

I have four Synology boxes, and on all of them I am using a CableCreation 2.5G Ethernet to USB Adapter, Gigabit LAN Dongle, and the speed is very steady.

On the F4-423, I have two Ethernet ports hooked up, and I tried binding them and the best I can do is binding them using a dynamic link - however, this is still slower by far than the Synology boxes using CableCreation 2.5G Ethernet to USB Adapter, Gigabit LAN Dongles.

I tried using a dongle with the Terramaster, but it doesn't seem to find it.

Is there some setup that I'm missing before trying the dongles?

Surely, both of the ethernet ports on -423 models are already 2.5Gbe? So, what are you expecting?

Using FastCopy, I can transfer files at a steady 129 MB/s from and to the Synology boxes. Any one of them - the speed is steady and does not vary.

Using FastCopy on the Terramaster, I achieve 74 MB/s, occasionally topping out at 94 MB/s - and that's using both 2.5 GB in bonded mode.

I'm trying to replace my Synology boxes with Terramaster and have a lot of files to transfer. That 74MB/s speed is terrible.

Hello! Slow copy speeds can be caused by various factors (such as hard drive models, array synchronization, network cables, etc.). If you are using a newly purchased F4-423 device, the system creates a RAID array immediately after the initial TOS installation. The array will remain in a synchronization state during this process, which may impact copy performance.

Additionally, to more precisely identify the issue, kindly provide the specific model of the installed hard drives and the current version of your TOS system.

The TOS version is 6.0.694
BIOS is 5.19
Hard drives are four ST24000NT002-3N1101 24TB Iron Wolf Pro

The synchronization has been done for a couple of days now - I'm merely transferring some files at the moment.

I also have two 4TB M2 SSDs, one for TOS and another for Hypercache, they are:

Just a thought, but while you are just transferring (large) files, Hypercache may not be giving you any benefit and may even hinder your transfer speeds. Each nvme slot only gets ONE Pcie.v3 channel, so that may bottleneck transfers as well as hypercache delaying the actual transfer to hdd (however miniscule the time element). Maybe try disabling hypercache temporarily and see what happens. {If nothing else, it may prove something to me }

I'll certainly give it a try, but out of curiosity, why do you think Hypercache is not helping?

BTW, is there an easy way to disable Hypercache? I don't really want to uninstall it and re-install it.

I don't use Hypercache myself (not having a viable use-case) and I have never seen any convincing information as to it's effectiveness. I also did not understand when TM changed the available modes a few versions back.

Only select RealTek USB Ethernet adapters seem to be supported; drivers/support aren't present within TOS for other manufacturers' solutions.

Hypercache does help when you use the TNAS for a (business) file share, as those are likely going to smallish files that are regularly accessed & there will be many files that are loaded on a daily basis; a Hypercache for a Plex/media library is almost pointless as those are huge files that are generally played once or twice (unless you have kids that are in love with/addicted to a particular episode of a show or a movie), so what benefits would there be to caching that unless you are maybe watching a movie in small bites for some reason.

All file sharing protocols must be disabled prior to deleting/disabling Hypercache.

That starts to make sense, but when you say "select", I assume that only certain models...so can you clarify which models?

I'm willing to hunt one down.

I'll be damned. I just googled Terramaster RealTek USB Ethernet adapter

And the very first line is for a dongle sold by Terramaster.

I'll be trying that one first, and I'll post my results here...depending on when I get it.
