New Guy here

Post by LordP »

Hello all,

I just received my F4-423 today, and I'm almost ready to start the installation.

I'm a bit confused about this forum. I keep getting 404 errors when I try to read the FAQ, and I can only post here in the Lounge.

So, I have the F4-423, and tomorrow I'm getting two 4TB M2 SSDs, and I'm wondering what the best way to configure this.

I'm planning on installing TOS on one SSD and using the other as cache - does that make sense?

My RAM also come tomorrow, but the drives will not get to me until Monday.

Thanks for any help.

Install just one to get TOS onto it.

Running a 4 TB cache only makes sense if you'll have a 20+ TB data pool; otherwise a 1 TB will suffice.

If these 4 TB drives are PCIe 4.0 or newer 5.0 drives, they're being wasted, as that 423 series TNAS only allows for a PCIe 3.0 ×1 connection to each of its m.2 slot; you'll never get the full throughput out of newer drives.

Arrgghhh.

I managed to install TOS on the single M2 I installed, and now it wants to create a storage pool.

I don't want to use this M2 for a storage pool - I'll use hard drives for this. The second M2 will be for cache only.

Is it safe to just quit? I only see "Next" and no way to cancel.

My plan was to finish this and install the second M2 and see if I can figure out how to make it the cache.

Thanks.

I managed to install everything except for the Hypercache.

I installed TOS when I had a single SSD in the system, then I added the second SSD plus 4x 24TB hard drives. Everything seems to be OK.

Now I'm being asked where to install the Hypercache, and I see the SSDs labeled "NVME Disk_sdza" and "NVME Disk_sdzb".

How can I tell which one has the TOS on it?

I'd like one SSD to have the TOS and the other the Hypercache - if that's possible to do.

I updated to the latest TOS and now it shows me where the TOS is installed and only allows the cache on the empty SSD.
