Hello all,
I have quite an oddball issue, hoping someone can assist. I'm currently running a Terramaster F2-212, and for the past few months it's worked a charm. I bought an additional 10TB HDD to use once I began to run out of space on my initial HDD (Both drives are WD Red Plus), and I'm finding it to be a pain to actually get working.
When plugging the HDD into the bay, the greenlight on the unit itself lights up, no blinking occurs to show read/write activity, but it's picking up on it. It's also worth noting that the drive itself is active while in the bay, as the disk spins until I take it out of the bay. Within TOS though, it states the bay is empty. If I swap the drive to a 1TB from a different brand (In this case it was Toshiba) it works just fine in the bay. I know it's not an issue with the actual drive, as my desktop picks up on it when I attempted connecting it.
I've tried restarting the NAS, re-installing TOS (Due to circumstance with a power outage funny enough), confirmed my F2-212 is up to date, and cleaned both the drive and the port in the F2-212.
I'm at a bit of a loss on what to do, and any advice would be appreciated.
[Help] Issue with HDD being finicky
Re: [Help] Issue with HDD being finicky
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. Based on your description, our preliminary assessment suggests that the new hard drive may have a compatibility issue. To help us better identify and resolve the problem, we would appreciate it if you could provide the following details:TCoyneIT wrote: ↑10 May 2025, 12:37 Hello all,

1. Is the newly added HDD listed in our compatibility list? You can verify this by visiting the following link:
https://www.terra-master.com/global/compatibility/
2. After inserting the WD Red Plus Disk into the device, can it be detected under the following TOS system path:
Control Panel > Storage Manager > Disk > Overview?

Re: [Help] Issue with HDD being finicky
Does sound like a bad contact with the larger HDD. Given difference in mass of the drives, maybe the new HDD is causing some sag in the drive caddy when inserted.
Check security of the drive in the caddy.
Check the security of caddy fixing when inserted.
On one of my older units I installed some thin, smooth self-adhesive tape on the lower slide of the chassis. (In my case I had some spare velcro tape and I used the smooth part of that) This did not impede insertion/removal and just provided the (needed) extra support. (and it adds a little bit of noise insulation as well).

Re: [Help] Issue with HDD being finicky
Thanks for the response. To answer your questions:
1. It is listed as compatible. The drive I'm attempting to use is a WD Red Plus WD101EFBX. Manufacture date of October 2024.
2. I do not have the option of "Disk" sadly. Normally the HDD would appear under the "Hard Drive" option for me when inserted. As noted it shows the 2nd bay has the 8TB drive under that option in Storage Manager, but the 1st bay still comes up as empty (Light is still green on the NAS itself). Under the logs it does not pick up the insertion of the WD Red Plus drive, but does list the Toshiba drive I had tested with prior.
Re: [Help] Issue with HDD being finicky
Something of note as well after some additional testing: The 10TB drive does come up if I switch it to the 2nd bay, but the 8TB will disappear if moved to the first. Not sure if there's much to gleam from that but.
Re: [Help] Issue with HDD being finicky
I'm very sorry for the trouble you've caused.
From your description, it seems that the first bay did not recognize the hard drive. You can refer to Gray's method, or tilt the NAS or change the angle to see if it can be read normally.
please generate and download the log report package in TOS > Technical Support > Report Issues, and then send it to our technical support email (support(at)terra-master.com) for inspection.
If you can't send the zip package because it's too big, you can delete the following folders of the zip package to reduce the size.
etc>tos>scripts
etc>udev
etc>init.d
This may allows us to better and faster judge the problem and come up with a solution.
