Using a D6-320 with an F2-221

Post by lmccow »

Hi there,

I currently have an F2-221 NAS running TOS 5.1.67 (latest) and have been looking at the D6-320 as an option to extend my storage options.
I am making this topic first to ask if this is possible, and second how I would go about doing this.

Firstly compatability. The product page for the D6-320 states:
D6-320 can be connected to the USB interface of TerraMaster NAS after special adaptation and adjustment. Creating arrays and storage pools on D6-320 with TerraMaster TOS could expand the storage space of NAS. Remark: this function works only on TerraMaster NAS running TOS 5.1 or above.
I already satisfy the TOS version requirements but what about USB?
The D6-320 has a USB 3.2 Type-C port, while the F2-221 has only USB 3.0 Type-A ports.
Getting a USB-A to USB-C cable is easy enough and I accept a reduction in transfer speed, but would this cause any issues with compatability between the two devices?
Lastly what does the 'special adaptation and adjustment' refer to?

Second, using the expanded storage.
Assuming the two devices are compatible and I connect the USB cable between the two, what happens?
Do the disks just appear in the TOS control panel as if they were physically plugged into the F2-221 and available to add to a storage pool or is there something else required?

You can connect D6-320 to your F2-221.
To use the storage space on your D6-320, you have two options. A, directly mount your current drives as partitions to your TNAS if you already have file systems and data on your drives. B, you can use the TOS UI storage utility to create a new storage pool with the drives on your D6-320.

Hi,

I would like to ask a question here since my situation is similar, but in the opposite direction. First of all, if I understand correctly, NAS and Windows PCs use two different files systems for hard drives.

I already use s D6-320 connected to my Window PC.
I am considering buying a Terra Master Nas.

If I understand well, in order to keep all my existing files on my actual hdd, I should make a copy of all files, then connect to the NAS, format the Hdd using TOS environment and after that copy all files on my hdds?

Yes, TNAS and windows using different file systems. As TOS 6 offers a new feature of mounting different file systems, if you only want to use your data stored on USB drive, you can mount this USB to TNAS without formatting the drive, just mount it as a external folder.
