Control Panel->Remote Folder->OneDrive
- MY MAIN COMPLAINT: When setting up a Remote Folder for OneDrive and a user clicks the 'Mount Cloud Drive' folder icon, the user is prompted to select a 'Cloud drive directory', ie any 1 OneDrive folder or subfolder in the directory tree picker that is presented — yet: 1) the root directory of the user's OneDrive account can't be selected; and 2) although there is some benefit in this design in that it does allow users to choose individual OneDrive folders rather than their entire OneDrive, it means users must create separate Remote Folders for each OneDrive subfolder branch they (may ever) wish to access from their TNAS, which is not necessarily desirable, may be likely to be considered NOT desirable, and is cumbersome due to the large number of steps involved in adding it.
Expected behaviour:
In Windows and on other platforms that I've used (including Android via its 'X-Plore' file manager app), the one-time action of adding a OneDrive folder to the file browser means the entire OneDrive account's directory tree is able to be accessed and navigated. The fact that TOS doesn't allow me to do this is disappointing as it means it means more work setting TOS up and more work managing it. For each and every OneDrive parent folder I want to have access to, I have to create a new Remote Folder on my TNAS. This involves: manually typing a Name, waiting for 'Configuring...' to complete, granting authorization from Microsoft in another browser tab, locating the desired single remote OneDrive folder or subfolder — and manually recreating(duplicating) the OneDrive folder structure locally on my TNAS (ex: /homes/Daniel/private/OneDrive/Documents, /homes/Daniel/private/OneDrive/Pictures and so on) by clicking the '+' button to create the needed local directory within the directory-picking pane; in Windows or on my Android devices, I don't have to do anything - once I've added OneDrive to the file manager, I have anytime access to the full directory tree. - Additional (minor) related issue observed:
After adding a OneDrive directory as a Remote Folder, on return to the Remote Folder->Cloud Drive panel, the just-created item is not given selection (blue border); in fact, nothing is selected. Newly created Remote Folders are not automatically Enabled at the end of creation, so users have to know/remember to click the Remote Folder they've just added/edited to select it (blue border), and then click the checkmark icon above to Enable it (2 steps). As the typical usage scenario likely sees Enable immediately after creation, it would preferable for TOS to automatically preselect the item upon return to this panel in order to save the user an unnecessary click, and to make the enabling process more intuitive. - Additional (minor) related issue observed:
When editing an existing Remote Folder and using the 'Confirm' button or 'x' (close) button to return to the Remote Folder->Cloud Drive panel, although the just-edited item *is* selected (blue border), each of the Unmount, Edit, and Enable icon/buttons above the list of Remote Folders are unnecessarily greyed out (light grey, not dark) and unusable. The user must temporarily click/select another Remote Folder first, or click a different tab ('NFS Folder' or 'SMB Folder') at the top, or otherwise exit that panel and return to it before they can select the Remote Folder in question and see its Unmount, Edit, and Enable icons enabled for use (dark grey). - Additional (serious) issue observed:
For a currently disabled Remote Folder, when clicking the checkmark icon to Enable it, TOS sometimes reports "Operation succeeded!" in a popup notification at the top of the screen yet the Remote Folder remains in a "Not enabled" state instead of changing to "Enabled" as expected. When this happens, repeated attempts to Enable always result in the same "Not enabled" condition. Closing the Control Panel window and reopening it and repeating the steps also does not resolve the issue, and neither did (in my testing) logging the user out of TOS and then logging back in and attempting to Enable it again. In fact, having done exactly that, when I opened File Manager, I was met an "Operation failed!" popup notification at the top and File Manager panes that were blank on both left and right sides (again, repeatable upon close & reopen). After going back to the Remote Folder->Cloud Drive panel again, selecting the desired Remote Folder and clicking the Enable icon, I re-opened File Manager an encountered a new condition in which the left pane did populate with folder items but the right (content) pane remained empty no matter what I clicked on the left side. Once again, this was repeatable no matter how many times I closed File Manager and reopened it. When I tried to edit the problematic Remote Folder, after I clicked to select a cloud drive directory, the left panel of the 'Select a Directory' pane said "No valid data" and the right pane was empty. The only solution I found that would allow me to Enable the problematic Remote Folder was to Unmount it and go manually re-add it. - Additional (minor) issue observed:
During set up of the OneDrive Remote Folder, after the 'Select a Directory' panel opens, the currently selected item's selection background colour is not consistent between left pane and right pane and is therefore not intuitive and can be confusing, potentially resulting in the user adding the wrong folder. Steps to reproduce: 1) Having granted access to the Microsoft OneDrive account, click the folder icon next to 'Cloud drive directory' to open the 'Select a Directory' panel; 2) In the left pane, click folders until one is found that contains at least 1 subfolder (subfolder contents are displayed in the right pane) and observe the grey selection background given to the item in the left pane; 3) click a displayed subdirectory name in the right pane and observe that this item receives a blue selection background; 4) In the left pane, click the same parent folder as selected in Step#2, and observe it gets a grey selection background again while the subdirectory name clicked in Step#3 continues to have its blue selection background; 5) Click 'Confirm', and observe that the 'Cloud drive directory' field is filled correctly with the name of the last-clicked item, even though it was a folder with a grey selection background and not the one with the blue selection background. (It'd be easy to assume the blue-background selected item would be added). SUGGESTED FIX: the blue selection background should be applied to the most recently clicked item regardless of left side/right side location; in the test case, this would mean that in Step#2, the selected folder in the left pane would get a blue selection background; I'd suggest that as a visual aid, when an item in the right pane is selected in Step #3, the parent in the left pane should get a grey background, and in Step#4, when the folder in the left pane is clicked, the right pane would lose focus so its blue selection background should be removed and given to the selected item in the left pane (grey background replaced by blue background). - I also experienced numerous time-out issues during OneDrive Remote Folder creation (as I was leaving my TOS tab with the Remote Folder 'Select a Directory' tree picker pane open while wrote this post in another tab), resulting in various odd behaviours: an inability to continue browsing the OneDrive directory tree; ability to add the last selected folder from the left pane and then 'Confirm' to seemingly successfully add the Remote Folder, only to find that when Enabled, it would not actually connect to the OneDrive service, so resulted in blank right-side pane in File Manager; time-out/continuous 'busy' indicator when adding Remote Folder after clicking 'Confirm', requiring a Log Out and Log In to work around and an Unmount and re-add of the problem Remote Folder to fully resolve the issue.
