Compatible UPS not connecting with USB

Post by wheresmyups »

I have an F2-223, and a TrippLite AVR750U, which should be compatible according to https://www.terra-master.com/us/compatibility/#tab-6. When following the instructions here https://help.terra-master.com/TOS/view/ ... s/flag/UPS under "USB UPS", I start running into issues. Selecting "TNAS UPS Server" in the dropdown still requires a Network UPS IP, which is not possible with my TrippLite AVR750U, and so I can never hit apply. Under UPS Information on the same page (settings > Hardware & Power), it says "UPS is not connected". I've tried both USB ports on the NAS, and also reseated multiple times on both ends. This is a brand new UPS and USB cable. I have also tried connecting after a restart, during a restart, and before a restart, but nothing worked. What do I need to do?

Which version of TOS do you have installed?

Have you tried an old usb cable from a printer or similar?

Under normal circumstances, the UI of the UPS control interface will be changed after you accessing the USB interface.
For this exception, please contact the technical support e-mail, we will arrange engineers to check the problem for you remotely. (Please attach a link to this topic)

I have not tried another cable, but this cable is brand new. Regardless, if I SSH into the NAS I can see that it is aware of the UPS:

if I run `dmesg | grep -i usb` then I get
[40144.917224] usb 1-1: USB disconnect, device number 48
[40145.532028] usb 1-1: new low-speed USB device number 49 using xhci_hcd
[40145.665229] usb 1-1: New USB device found, idVendor=09ae, idProduct=3024, bcdDevice= 0.02
[40145.665237] usb 1-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=1, SerialNumber=5
[40145.665240] usb 1-1: Product: AVR750U
[40145.665242] usb 1-1: Manufacturer: Tripp Lite
[40145.665244] usb 1-1: SerialNumber:
[40145.697284] hid-generic 0003:09AE:3024.327A: hiddev96,hidraw0: USB HID v1.10 Device [Tripp Lite AVR750U] on usb-0000:00:14.0-1/input0

also if I run `lsusb` then I get
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 058f:6387
Bus 001 Device 019: ID 09ae:3024
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002

and you can see that 09ae is the vendor ID for Tripp Lite

You should be able to update to a more recent version of TOS5. (latest is 5.1.145). That might help. Check the 'Update Notice' Thread.

I updated to 5.1.145, but TOS still doesn't see any UPS connected.

I updated to 6.0.460 per support and still having no luck. I made an appointment with support and they never showed up.

I've verified that the NAS can still see the UPS with `lsusb`, however, the UPS gets disconnected every few seconds and then reconnects. I plugged the NAS into a Macbook and there were no disconnects. It seems that the NAS is either missing a driver, or has a faulty USB connection.

I plugged in a USB thumb drive just to check the USB ports on the NAS, and it did not drop out, so we know the USB ports are working. This means it is probably a driver issue.

I ran

Code: Select all

/lib/nut/usbhid-ups -DD -a ups
and got this output:
This TrippLite device (09ae:3024) is not (or perhaps not yet) supported
by usbhid-ups. Please make sure you have an up-to-date version of NUT. If
this does not fix the problem, try running the driver with the
'-x productid=3024' option. Please report your results to the NUT user's
mailing list <[email protected]>.
So I backed up my files in

Code: Select all

/etc/nut/
and made this my config in

Code: Select all

/etc/nut/ups.conf
:

Code: Select all

[ups]
        driver = usbhid-ups
        port = auto
        productid = 3024
and tested with

Code: Select all

/lib/nut/usbhid-ups -DD -a ups -x productid=3024
and got this output:
0.001267 failed to detach kernel driver from USB device: could not detach kernel driver from interface 0: Operation not permitted
0.001270 Can't claim USB device [09ae:3024]: could not detach kernel driver from interface 0: Operation not permitted
A quick Google search took me to https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Network_UPS_Tools, so I followed these instructions:

edit

Code: Select all

/etc/udev/rules.d/50-ups.rules
(I had to create this file) and add the line

Code: Select all

SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="09ae", ATTR{idProduct}=="3024", GROUP="nut"
saved the file and then ran

Code: Select all

udevadm control --reload
udevadm trigger
I checked again with

Code: Select all

/lib/nut/usbhid-ups -DD -a ups -x productid=3024
and had a much different result, but it was still disconnecting

so I ran

Code: Select all

systemctl start nut-driver
systemctl start nut-server
and BOOM, now TOS can see my UPS.

Unfortunately I had to figure this out myself since support couldn't make their appointment time.
