ROllback or make a partitions snapshot of a working state of a TOS after an buggy update of TOS

Post by haborg »

Hi, I had been having issues and headaches with the unrealiable updates of TOS

I started using A Terramaster NAS in 2018 one F2-220 with 2 x 1TB HDD and at that time TOS 3

My main use of my lovely NAS is backup my entire colection of music, movies and photos and thanks to PLEX I spended lots and lots of hours tuning my multimedia libraries to have a 10/10 experience with PLEX

After a year I repalce the HDD to 2 x 4TB HDD and update to TOS 4

Once I update the TOS 4 release and plex crash, since that time I am user of this forum. I get fixed finally and Promise my self never upgrade the TOS if plex is working fine.

on 2023 again upgrade the HDD to 2x 8TB and because i was at TOS 4 almost 2 years, I tell my self well read read read and find the way to upgrade tos 5. My surprice is the terrible new that if a user comes from TOS 3 / 4 the system partition is just 2GB and TOS 5 and up needs a 8GB system partition.

I sped againg hour of backing up almos 4TB of files in a USB disk before to mess my NAS, dowload all the files and spedn hours to set up againg all my plex library

to be short, i do the task and get plex into 5.0.176 and after 5.1.40. At the begining i liked the new TOS , waste time set up all from the scratch , copy all the files into the new 8TB hdds but the after a few restart of tos the nas never up> I eperienced issues , lag suposed was the usb init boot, get info to update via ssh the usb init boot and damm it the process not works in tos 5 just 4 ans lower (come on terrasmter). I try to use anoter hdd 1TB for test and try to reintal tos 5.0.176 and discover that my usb init boot was ok

So I have to reset the borwsers , conect the 8TB disk and clean the tos parttions and try to reinstall againg TOS 5 crossinf my finger to not deleted my just copied files (4TB) againg and waste more time SO i got to installs TOS 5.0.176 and in that realeased Im until now, I wont update TNAS any more because is a lote waste of my time to make it work something that start working fine.

So Im a compuer enginner I used to work whith software to support a lot of comupert and makes hdd images like drbl , clonezilla, macrium to restores a PC in just minutes allow me to rollback or recover the estate of a computer if a new setup or new hdd image fails.

So TERRAMASTER can you develop a way to roll back and update of your TOS or a way to save the "Ok status" of a nas tos partitions to save and then if something fails (many posibilities) We can roll back or rewrite the old system (working fine) and avoid to waste time trying to get to work back the NAS. PLEASE
in short I want to be able to update TOS and if I not like or this breaks something I can rollback or back in time into my previous TOS state

We deeply apologize for the inconvenience we have caused you and fully understand your complaints. Indeed, TOS 3 and TOS 4 were launched 10 and 8 years ago, respectively, and the software planning at that time lacked rationality and foresight, which can no longer meet today's needs. This limitation has brought many difficulties to our longtime users when updating their systems, and we express our deepest apologies for this.

Please rest assured that the TOS system has been continuously evolving. Starting with TOS 5, we have prioritized the user's update experience and are committed to ensuring compatibility between different versions in future updates. We promise to continue making improvements to provide a better user experience. Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience caused to you and appreciate your understanding and support.
