I understood what you were saying.
I did indeed follow the instructions of method A to migrate away from TOS 4.x. I used an earlier version of 5.x (https://download2.terra-master.com/TOS_ ... 121730.ins) and when that failed I tried the newest version found from the link you provided. That also failed.
All of this was done last week so it's taken over a week of troubleshooting this issue only to have it suddenly start working based on either everything I'd done previously or based on exactly nothing that I'd done previously. With neither being an acceptable solution
Failed to access the SMB file service (network drive) on Windows?
Re: Windows users cannot use SMB file service to access?
It is not ruled out that the issue could be related to the hard drive or partition.
You can contact the official customer service or technical support email for remote troubleshooting.

Re: Windows users cannot use SMB file service to access?
Why would it be the hard drives or partitions? I still have all of my data, system boots and works fine drive integrity as per the OS is good.
The question is why did it happen and why did it just as suddenly stop? I have over 12TB's of data stored and what I suspect is that the update changed files permissions and it may have been chugging along in the background restoring them. The crash somehow ended this loop the system was in. I have no idea but I am struggling to have this all make sense.
When things don't work having a root cause A) helps prevent it from recurring and B) aids in restoration in the event it happens again. Having neither of does is not confidence inspiring.

Re: Windows users cannot use SMB file service to access?
Based solely on the information available so far, we can only make some speculations, but we cannot determine the cause of the problem.
In fact, the situation you are encountering has rarely been reported by others using the same device and system.
If you believe that venting your frustration will resolve the issue, then we can only express understanding and cannot do more for you.

Re: Windows users cannot use SMB file service to access?
Are there logs that I can collect and send to your support staff?
I have no interest in slinging mud on some internet forum. I'm seeking a genuine solution to the issue I faced. Thus far no one has suggested or even hinted at a possible solution or even a potential cause for the issue so yes I am understandable perturbed with the lack of any real progress or support.

yes.
Please generate and download the log report package in TOS > Technical Support > Report Issues, and then send it to support(at)terra-master.com for inspection.
If you can't send the zip package because it's too big, you can delete the following folders of the zip package to reduce the size.
etc>tos>scripts
etc>udev
etc>init.d

Re: Windows users cannot use SMB file service to access?
this might be a silly comment so please feel free to disregard, but how are you trying to access the NAS drive from a windows computer via the name or IP?
reason for asking is i have found that windows sometimes prevents access to the name if it thinks it is a different machine, now since i have read that you ugpraded from 4 to 5 and you have deleted and reset users permissions, it is entirely plausible that the windows machines are saying hang on this is a different nas drive with a different set of credentials so it denies you access, i have found sometimes when this happens if you switch to navigate to the IP address it will then accept it, also if you ignore any shares you have set up and just try to go to the NAS drive with the IP to see the list of Shares, does this work?
the other thing to see what happens on is, put a single blank hard drive in the NAS unit and see if it will set it up as a brand new setup and can you prove you can access it from a windows computer, as in one of your comments you say the unit shut down abnormally, well that could have corrupted the system
certainly not trying to sling any mud but the issue could be related to your windows computers denying you access, rather than the NAS drive, but equally it could be the upgrade paths that have not gone smoothly, so sometimes you just have to accept to wipe and start again and reset it up
but before you spend hours transfering data back across prove that it works from the most basic of situations, even if its just a hard drive you have lying around where you have no intention of actually using in real life

Re: Windows users cannot use SMB file service to access?
I agree with @sianderson’s first point. I’ve encountered a similar issue before, where after an update, I couldn’t access the NAS using its name, but I could connect just fine using the IP address. This often happens when Windows has trouble recognizing the device by its name due to credential or network changes, but using the IP address bypasses this issue.
Re: Windows users cannot use SMB file service to access?
For the time being, we have not found any obvious problems related to this from the system report you provided.
However, we note that you are using TOS 5.1.67 and your HDD is still in the old TOS4 storage structure. These HDDs are barely able to use TOS 5.1.67, and may cause various blockages and anomalies due to the small size of the system partition. And from the system report you provided, you are running a lot of applications and services.
It is recommended that you reinstall to TOS 5.0.176, which is very compatible with the old HDD storage structure.
