[Help] Spent $1000 For USB4 Direct Connection

Post by stuartGGF »

I soley bought this NAS for it's advised "direct USB4 PC connection" boasting 3000MB+ speeds but there is literally no info and anything in TOS to set this up. Is this a "coming later" feature or what?

Is your device the F6-425 Pro? This model supports direct connection to a computer via its USB4 port.
Use a USB4 cable to connect the USB4 ports of your NAS and computer respectively. Once the connection is established, navigate to the Control Panel in TOS and open the Network Settings page to proceed with further configurations.

yes it's the F6-425 Pro and there is nothing under "network" settings for such things. I've actually worked in network and storage engineering most of my life and this thing is just broken,

bahahahaha. Got this reply to my email to their support

"Hi Stuart,

Sorry that our NAS doesn't support USB connection to the workstation, it is ohly host port.

Probably you need a DAS instead of NAS right?"

Honestly this brand is a joke right now.

This is a newly launched product, and we suspect the sales team may have used incorrect product descriptions — possibly mixing them up with those of another model. If what you've reported is accurate, we will arrange a correction immediately. We sincerely apologize for any confusion this has caused.

What the heck? I'm sorry but that is unacceptable. This is not your first NAS. You've even got NAS Compares saying that this is possible. I suspect I can get a full refund on my trash can now?

After reconfirming with our product team, the two USB 4 ports on the F6-425 Pro are actually Thunderbolt 4 ports. These Thunderbolt 4 ports support Thunderbolt networking bridge functionality — no configuration is needed in TOS. Simply connect the F6-425 Pro's Thunderbolt 4 port to a Thunderbolt 4-equipped computer using a Thunderbolt 4 cable. Your computer will detect a new network adapter. Once you assign it an IP address on the same subnet as your local network, you can mount the NAS storage via SMB and use it directly on your computer. That's how Thunderbolt 4 direct bridging works. Hope this helps! We apologize — since this is a new feature, our internal training for the sales team hasn't been thorough enough yet.

The unit literally says USB4 next to each port on the back of the unit. How on earth can you mess up so bad. My workstation has USB4 only so this Thunderbolt network adapter is not possible. Seems like Terramaster have no idea what they are doing and I will definitely be staying away from this brand from now on.

We sincerely apologize for the impression this has left. As this is the first product featuring a bridge function, our internal training has not yet been sufficiently comprehensive, and some team members — including myself — still lack a deep understanding of this capability. Consequently, we have had to rely on our R&D and product teams for clarification on most matters. That said, given that Thunderbolt 4 is backward compatible with USB4, if your computer's USB4 port supports the bridge function, it should theoretically work. Would you be willing to test this connection?
