HELP with RAID move. Not sure where else to post !

Post by rege0039 »

I have a RAID 5(I think) array from my failed f2-220.

I have purchased a 2nd hand F2-210.

I have plugged the new new f2-210 and it is found by the PC TNAS app, starts and says there are no discs.

I put the old discs in, in the correct order. The NAS restarted and asked if it should boot from the existing TOS on the discs. I said yes.

Now when the discs are in the NAS won't start and can't ne found on the network.

I really want the data of the discs.

What can I do to get the F2-210 to boot with the discs from the F2-220 in it ?

The -210 and -220 utilise different processors (ARM and Intel x86 respectively). To directly utilise the -220 disks you would need at least a compatible Intel based unit. There may be other requirements I am not aware of as I have only experience of the (intel) -221 models and later.
F5-221 TOS7.0.0777 - 4x4TB (Ironwolf) Traid
F2-424 TOS7.0.0777 - 2x500GB nvme (P3) Traid, 2x6TB HDD (HGST) Traid
F2-221 TOS7.0.0777 - 1x3TB Ext4, 1x4TB Btrfs
F2-425+ TOS7.0.0777 - 2x500GB nvme (P3) Traid, 2x6TB HDD (EXOS) Traid

That makes sense.

Look like I might be trying to plug one of the drives in to a SATA and setting up a LINUX partition !

If I was to buy a newer one, say an f2-424 would it matter that the TOS versions will be different ? I think my old one was running TOS 5 but it might have been 6.

220 TNAS models only got up to TOS 5 & were not part of TOS 6 or 7 builds.

The newer builds can read the previous ones' drive structures, so it shouldn't matter which ×86/×64 model you choose as a replacement.

However what will matter is if your system partition on those drives from the 220 TNAS was already 8 GB (from the previous 2 GB system partition older TOS releases had), as that newer 8 GB system partition is a requirement of all current builds.

If you're planning to purchase a new device, I would recommend the 425 series, such as the F2-425 Plus. This new model supports M.2 SSDs, so you can install the system on an SSD. Then, you can mount the hard drives from your original F2-220 onto the new F2-425 Plus without affecting the array functionality at all. However, you will need to wipe the existing system partitions on those drives to prevent boot confusion caused by two different system partitions.
