[Help] D5 TB... 4 disks died at the same time?

Post by edgley »

It looks like the 4 WD disk have all died at the same time, leaving just the Toshiba.

I cannot believe it.
In 30 years of computer use I have never seen a fail like this - as the WD all came from different sources and not the same batch.

At a loss what to do - especially where to find the funds to replace / as after 5 years of practice its failed when I have Three Big Jobs to finish.

What also concerns me is that they ran as RAID5 for years okay only to fail with less than 6m running as RAID0.

Oh well, don't play with the big boys if you can't take a knock.
Thank the stars I had all 12TB backed up online.

Big thumbs up to Backblaze. I live in the Middle of Nowhere, England and just have had Full Fibre.
I am able to upload / download 1TB a day!

Seeing that you said "all 4 WD hard drives failed," I understand your feelings—a simultaneous complete failure is logically almost impossible, especially since they come from different batches.

To help you pinpoint the problem, I would like to ask you to provide the following key information:

1. How did you discover that "all 4 WD hard drives failed"?
Was it that all the indicator lights on the front panel of the D5 turned red?
Or did the RAID Manager Pro software on your computer report an error, showing all hard drives as failed?
Or were these hard drives completely invisible in Disk Management/Disk Utilities?

2. What actions did you take before and after discovering the problem?
Did you switch the RAID mode (e.g., from RAID5 to RAID0)?
Has there been any recent unexpected power outage, forced shutdown, or unplugging and plugging in the power/Thunderbolt cable?
Have you replaced the Thunderbolt cable or tested it with different computers?

Thanks for the reply.
Please excuse the lack of info the first time, I should know better :)

Now you've mentioned what might have caused it, there is a chance that it happened when the TB cable came out the back of the Mac when the D5 was working as a 5x4TB RAID0.

I remember the RAID failed and marked one disk as dead.

I then rebuilt it on the existing 4 drives and downloaded about 8TB onto it.
This then ran okay for about a week, then the second problem happened and now 4 drives do not even show.

I am going to start it up again and see if I can get any additional info.

Hmm, powered it on. I could hear some disks spin up and I could hear at least one doing the Lock of Doom noise - and then the unit died.
After checking, it appears that the PSU has died.

As I mentioned in another post, I do not have the OEM PSU and so purchased a 12v 7A 84W unit off amazon, June 2023.

I guess the first thing I need to do is buy another PSU.
As the last one cost £12, all I can think to do is see what is there for more £££

I have now found a 10A unit costing £16 which can be here later tonight, guess we start here.

And all you lucky pips, I will keep post updated :)

To be clear, I am not "blaming" the D5 for what has happened - I have nothing but praise for "cheapest" solution to let me play with the DaVinci Big Boys.

The new 12v 10A supply has arrived - definitely a move up the scale in quality.
The result?

All five disks are back!
AND the RAID0 is still live!!

Amazing. The effects of a dying PSU. I remember from my old Windows days, problem with old PC thats weird? Change the PSU first.

Wow - amazing. speechless - wow !

Don't let your guard down. I also had a 10A supply on one of my NAS. It failed :(
