[Help] Capacity of storage pool not increased after adding disk  [SOLVED]

Post by Araetos »

Hi,

I have a F2-423 running with TOS 6.0.694 and, until now, I was using it with a single 4TB disk and it worked fine.
This week I tried to extend the available space with a new 4TB disk (exactly the same model that I already had).

I followed those instructions in order to add the disk to the storage pool, but, after the synchronization ended, the storage pool capacity did not increase at all. Therefore, I cannot increase the associated volume size.

As seen in the screenshot above, the new disk is recognized, but the capacity has not changed at all.

Can you please help me understand the issue ?

You are currently using a TRAID array.

When there is only one hard drive, TRAID is equivalent to single-disk use;

When a second hard drive is added, TRAID automatically switches to RAID 1 (mirroring mode).

RAID 1 completely mirrors the data across two hard drives, primarily to provide single-disk failure protection (redundancy). Therefore, the available capacity is always equal to the capacity of a single hard drive (approximately 4TB), and adding a second hard drive will not increase the storage space.

Your storage pool is currently successfully synchronized and in a state of redundancy protection, which is precisely the design goal of TRAID in a two-disk configuration.
However, given that you have a 2-bay NAS and if you truly need 8TB of available space, you need to:
1.Back up all data
2.Delete the current storage pool and volume
3.Recreate it as RAID 0 or two single disks.

Ok, I understand, thank you for the clarity. I misinterpreted the way TRAID worked, as I assumed I could choose between redundancy or not.

I'll find a way to backup the data and reconstruct the volume, then, thanks.
