[Help] My Nas will randomly be unreachable for Plex

Post by kikikinz »

Hello,

I have an f4-424. tos v 5.1.145-00320. My nas seems to be somewhat unstable. Mainly using my nas for plex and streaming. My server on plex will randomly be unreachable and show yellow caution error. And sometimes when streaming the video will hang and I have to restart or wait for the server to wake up again. Sometimes its just like 30 seconds.

I dont have any security set up? Not sure if theres anything else I can do to fix it? My internet is also stable. 1gb internet and it doesn't drop. No ping. It is getting internet through a splitter so 2 computers and the nas get hardwired to the ethernet. Our internet on the pc's seem stable? But I do see that it might be the core of the problem? Just trying to make sure theres no settings I need to change so the server is using enough resources or no firewall etc issues? Thanks

To more accurately identify the issue, I need to confirm a few key details with you first:
  • What model of hard drive are you using (mechanical hard drive or SSD)? Have you set up a RAID?
  • When playback stutters, are you playing a 4K original file directly, or does the server need to transcode (for example, when watching on a phone or browser)? Do you have a Plex Pass subscription and have hardware acceleration enabled?
I suggest you first check and try the following optimization steps to see if the problem persists:

1. Disable hard drive sleep. The "waiting 30 seconds for the server to wake up" you mentioned is a typical characteristic of a hard drive waking up from sleep mode. When the hard drive is asleep, Plex reading the database causes significant delay, resulting in the client showing "warnings" or stuttering. Please go to the TOS system interface > Control Panel > General Settings > Hardware & Power > Hard Drive Sleep, and set "Hard Drive Sleep Time" to "Never."

2. Check system resource load. The F4-424 is powerful, but if TOS is running high I/O resource tasks like "file indexing" or "media thumbnail generation" in the background, it can also affect normal video playback. When video playback stutters, please click the system info icon at the top right of the TOS desktop to check whether CPU and memory usage are normal.
