[Help] System OS migration from ssd to HD's

Post by IDG »

Hi, Currently I have my OS installed on a SSD m.2 on the F4-424. I think it has a problem. Am I correct in thinking I can Migrate from the SSD to the currently installed hard drives,Remove the SSD and replace with a new one then migrate back. From what I read I should lose nothing stored on the drives is this correct?

You can directly migrate the system to the newly purchased M.2 SSD. After the migration is complete, the system will no longer be retained on the old SSD. If there is data on the old M.2 SSD, it is recommended that you copy it to the HDD for backup. Additionally, to ensure stable system operation, please try to avoid storing other data on the system drive.

Thats very helpfull thank you. Can the OS be put on the HD an SSD at the same time. I'm wondering now what would happen if the SSD failed. Would it be better to have the OS on all the HD's and not the SSD.

With o/s partitions 2 drives would be subject to a Raid-1 (mirror) array for those partitions. It is not advisable to run a raid array across dissimilar drives. TOS5 (introduced before nas with nvme capability) the o/s partitions had a raid-1 across all HDD. During TOS6 and nvme evolution TOS o/s became limited to 2 drives max. imo best to use either 1 or 2 HDD OR 1 or 2 nvme, but not one of each. If you limit o/s to a single drive it is not that difficult to re-install the o/s itself (excluding BETA releases where the .ins packages are not immediately released.) If you have complex setups with multiple users you need to pay attention to saving configuration files; possibly including exports of user and group designations for reference.

ok that was some very useful information. I think I will remove my cache SSD then install a new one in that slot for the OS and move it over and then remove the old OS drive.I didn't notice much performance improvement with the cache SSD so I may just leave it out or put the OS on it as well.
