Finally F2-425 Plus and SN7100...now?

Post by Puccio71 »

Hi all,
this is my idea:
when I will have the NAS here I will put the M2 into it and inizialize NAS without physical disks, this way I will install TOS on the SSD, is it right?

My question is: how TOS will "use" the SSD? It will create a small "volume" for TOS and let me add another volume to install (let's say) applications and containers?

Why the heck there are no 512GB (or less) disks on the compatibility page for such NAS?

I will move physical disks from a QNAP NAS. I think I will move one disk into TNAS, transfer data from QNAS to TNAS and move second disk to make RAID 1? What's "TRAID" and it could be a solution?

Thanks.

You can choose to install the system on an SSD alone. After the SSD is used as the system disk, you can still create storage pools and volumes on this SSD to install applications and store data. As a system disk itself, there is no size limit; you can even use a 128GB SSD. TRAID is our proprietary RAID technology. When you use two hard disks to set up TRAID, it can be considered as RAID 1.

That's great, and is it a suggested configuration to have one SSD for both TOS and (let's say) data?

I meant that on the Compatibility Page for the F(2/4)-425 there are no SSDs smaller than 1TB so I assumed I can't use them.

Are there any benefits on using TRAID over RAID1?
And (I assume) it is possible to make TRAID/RAID1 when I will add the second disk.

Thank you! Can't wait to switch to this new "toy" :D

If you install without raid, you would need to reinstall if you wish to later make it raid. The "beauty" of Traid is tat you can configure it one drive only and then add a second drive later.
F5-221 TOS7.0.0777 - 4x4TB (Ironwolf) Traid
F2-424 TOS7.0.0777 - 2x500GB nvme (P3) Traid, 2x6TB HDD (HGST) Traid
F2-221 TOS7.0.0777 - 1x3TB Ext4, 1x4TB Btrfs
F2-425+ TOS7.0.0777 - 2x500GB nvme (P3) Traid, 2x6TB HDD (EXOS) Traid

So, If I will power on with just the SSD, TOS will be installed on this SSD (later on I could define a new storage pool/volume on the remaining space to install applications and/or dockers).

Then I will insert ONE physical disk, initialize it, transfer data and when all finished and well configured if I add another physical disk I can't make a RAID1? Really?!

Should I insert the first disk and choose TRAID so when I will add the second one it will join the TRAID configuration?

Thanks Gremlin.

Yes, you can first insert a hard drive, select TRAID mode to create a storage pool. When you add other hard drives, you can add them to this TRAID array.

I have two 250GB M.2 SSDs as the system volume in my F2-425 Plus and they're perfectly happy. I also have a roughly 220GB data volume on them. Normally, compatibility lists only show what's been tested and known to work. There's a limit to what can be tested...... Also, older drives are less likely to be tested on newer hardware.

Hello, here you can find more confirmed M.2 SSD models shared by users:

What I would find more interesting is a list of drives that failed to work. I expect just about any M.2 drive to work in an M.2 slot so the real news is those that either don't work or are unsuitable.
