Back up through TerraSync takes twice as much space as the folder itself

TerraSync is a cloud drive service application that helps users build their own private cloud drive services with their TNAS devices.

Back up through TerraSync takes twice as much space as the folder itself

Post by R1cheh »

When I back up files/folders from a PC to the NAS (RAID 1) through TerraSync, the disk space taken on the NAS is much more than the space of the files.
For example, I back up folder with total size 1.26 Tb and in the TerraSync folder on NAS it actually takes 2.55 Tb.

I took a look around the folder and I figured, that there is and extra folder, created by the system - .ter_sys - with a size of 1.26 Tb (equal to the size of the back up!). I can't really tell what's inside this folder: the majority of the space is taken by the sub-folder chunks, which I can't access.

I believe there is definitely a problem with the size of this system folder, though I can't find any information on how to deal with it.

Because TerraSync now records file versions for all files by default. This operation requires at least double the storage space. Each time a file is modified, a file version is retained. This function is mainly used to restore files when they are accidentally deleted. It is recommended to use this function for important documents or documents that need to be edited frequently.

In the future, we will add a synchronization mode that does not require version history recording, so it won't take up more of your disk space.

I realize this is an old post, but I figured I'd add on here, because my issue is very much related to what has been discussed previously.

I ran into this issue of how much space TerraSync is taking up when I created a USB backup job that contained a folder that had been previously used in a TerraSync task. Here is my setup:

Volume1
  • /Media (this is a shared folder)
    • /Audio
      • /Library1...
      /Video
      /Photo
In TerraSync Console /Media is added as a Team Folder. This causes the creation of a .ter_sys folder under /Media that is the size of the total contents of the shared folder.

However, the only directory that is desired to use in a TerraSync task in the TerraSync client is media/Audio/Library1, and TerraSync allows the setup with a subfolder of the share.

So here are the issues:

First of all, a lot of duplication is taking place unnecessarily.

Second, (and this is what caused me the biggest problem) is that if a USB job is set up to back up /Media, the .ter_sys folder gets backed up as well and there is no way (at least that I can find) to exclude it from the USB backup. This puts an unnecessary requirement for the amount of USB storage necessary to manage backups.

I know that it has been said these issues are being considered for enhancement solutions, but in the meantime, with my setup, TerraSync has become useless to me.

Thanks for listening.

Why the space is doubled
By default, when you add a folder to the "Team Folders" in TerraSync, the system automatically enables File Versioning.

The Duplicate: To allow you to "go back in time" if a file is deleted or corrupted, TerraSync creates a base version of every file in that .ter_sys folder.

The "Chunks": The system breaks files into smaller pieces (chunks) to make future incremental updates faster. This is why you see a folder full of inaccessible data that equals the exact size of your backup.
