[Help] D4 320 - Not enough power for drives?  [SOLVED]

Post by jarrod2750 »

I warrantied out one D4 320 because of a USB issue and now I am having the same issue again with the new unit. Can it be that the unit simply doesn’t have enough power to run the 4 drives? I have two 8tb Seagate Barrudas and two 20tb Seagate Barraccudas. The issue is with one of the 20tb drives.

The drive is fine and I verified it by plugging it into two different docking stations. The Terramaster works fine when the drive is out. Is it possible that the power supply is underpowered when running the two larger drives? Can the power supply be upgraded or do I need a second unit?

D4-320 come with a power adapter 72W, short time peak output can be 95W. As stated on seagate official spec, The rated operational power of the 20TB Seagate BarraCuda is 8.9W, and its peak startup power may reach 16W. Even so, the power adapter should theoretically be sufficient. Please check if your hard drive is abnormal—if the hard drive motor malfunctions, power consumption can increase significantly. The D4-320 uses the same power adapter as its predecessor, the D4-300. With cumulative sales exceeding 400,000 units, there have been no previous user reports of insufficient power supply. If you still believe the issue lies with the D4-320’s power supply, you may choose to return the product and consider other brands or models.

@TMRoy - it’s got to be the unit because the drive works fine elsewhere and what I am reading elsewhere it is due to power consumption. How do I return the warrantied unit for a refund as you’re suggesting? I never had these problems with the older version I had. Thank you
