HDD & RAID Checkers

Post by rfbjr »

Background:
F2-223 and F4-424 in use
F4-223 now empty not in use

Ok I have F2-223 which has two 8TB (RAID 1) --> will be going to my old F4-223

F4-424 Pro currently has four 8TB (RAID 5)

I want to take two 8TB from 424 and install them in the F4-223 so I can end up with RAID 5 **I know the F4-223 will need the entire RAID rebuilt
**Will take the two drives from the F2-223 and install then in the F4-223 and bring it up, should come up as RAID 1 as it was in the F2-223.

I will then replace the now empty HDD slots on the 424 with 16TB or 20TB so keeping the RAID 5. Eventually replacing the remaining 8TB's with again 16/20TB drives.

So question one is on the 424 do I just shut it down and swap out one 8TB for the 16/20TB and rebuild the array or just do both at once? take out two 8TB's drives and replace them both with the larger drive and rebuild once? I would think the later.

Question two on the F4-223, bring it up first with the two 8TB drives as is, so it comes up as RAID 1 then add one or both 8TB drives and then convert to RAID 5? Is that possible?

For the first question, to replace small HDD with larger HDD on RAID5, please refer to this:
viewtopic.php?t=1543

For the second question, to change your two HDDs RAID1 to RAID5 with a new joined HDD, please refer to this:
viewtopic.php?t=1544

In either case, you can only perform an operation on one HDD at a time.

So far so good on both. F4-424 as two 20TB and two 8TB (remaining 20TB delivering today). I migrated the system disk from HD3 (8tb) to HD1(20tb) and the same for HD4 to HD2. Deciding now on the 424 to go to TRAID+ instead of RAID 5.

The 223 now has 8 TB and is rebuilding after the 4th HDD was added. Last on that box will be expanding the storage pool to max size.

Ok new wrinkle, IronWolf Pro 20TB are out of stock for the moment. :(
My new question is if I convert the RAID 5 to TRAID+ (so two 20TB and two 8TB) will I better utilize the 20TB drives than sticking with RAID 5. If remember correctly right now only 8TB is being used on the 20TB drives.

It doesn't look I can convert from RAID 5 to TRAID+. HDD layout is presently two 20TB and two 8TB drives.

Once I do get to swap out the two 8TB for 20TB, will I then have the ability to convert from RAID 5 to TRAID+?
If I can't do I need to wipe all drives (data is backed up) if I want to build it out as TRAID+.
If I do need a do over, what are the steps?

To convert RAID5 to TRAID+, you can only choose to rebuild. After backing up the data, please delete the corresponding volume and storage pool, then create a storage pool of TRAID+ type, and based on it, create a volume and a shared folder based on the volume.

Thank you. I'll pick a different weekend when we don't have a nor'easter storm coming and don't need to test my UPS.
