[Help] How to improve DAS cooling?

Post by PapaPete »

It has long been known** that high drive temperatures are an important factor in HDD failure, especially after the first few years. See the attached image from the Google analysis of over 100,000 disk drives. (Backblaze also does testing, but they manage drive environments much more carefully!)

As a tech guy with a few decades of experience going back to the earliest days of hard drive tech, I've always had a passion for ensuring reliable data storage for myself and those I serve. As a result, I have some questions not answered in any of the TerraMaster DAS documentation I've seen:

* What is the goal temp of TM DAS units (such as D4-320 I'm looking at)?

* Is there any way to adjust the "smart" fan settings? Typically, most DAS are not aggressive enough, because most people want the unit quiet and haven't thought about storage longevity ;)

I would LOVE to have ability to set a goal HDD temp of a choice of: 40C, 45C, 50C. I would typically use 40C, but I know others value quiet more than that :-D

Our set target is below 40°C to 50°C. However, some enterprise-grade hard drives may reach up to 52°C when fully loaded.
The DAS fan adjusts its speed intelligently based on internal temperature sensors and does not support manual speed control.
