[Help] F4-210 - Random High CPU use, services going down

Post by atirrell »

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post in because the problems are so strange.

Helping my friend with his F4-210 NAS. It's used mostly as a Plex server but also file storage.
We've been trying to expand the volume with no success after adding bigger drives, but that is a different problem and thread.

He's been telling me that he gets a lot of warning emails that the system is exceeding 90% usage in periods where no one is using Plex, which at least is the only thing I've personally been able to 'catch in the act' at using a lot of CPU while Plex is actually being used. He says this is often in the middle of the night and he sent me a whole stack of screenshots.

Now, aside from this, the whole web interface has been going down, as well as Plex. I don't know if file services are going down as well.

I've have him do a hard power off and power back on since he can't safely restart or shut down and it doesn't necessarily always come back up. I went over on Sunday night -- he'd had it off for a day or so -- and by the time I got there it was actually working.

What are some things I can do to troubleshoot? I'm getting concerned there's some kind of compromise to the system. When the web interface goes down like this, and if it's doing something like rebuilding/checking disks for hours on startup, how can we know?

what hard drives did you put into nas drive i.e make and model as you mention the issues started to happen once you had put new ones in?

the terramaster units can be quite picky and can be an expensive lesson to learn, although saying that the F2-210 that i have does seem to handle the oddity drives such as the seagate barracuda where as the F2-423 was very unstable running it

but i also found that i was getting high CPU warnings when i was using Plex on the F2-210 depending on the type of content i was watching, i.e if you are trying to watch 4k high bitrate content then it means the nas drive needs to work harder in decoding it etc, but lower 720 / 1080 content it seems to handle just fine, also are you sure that plex is not scanning the drives for content in the middle of the night / being made public to the internet?
