[Help] System goes unresponsive nightly.

Post by Midnight »

Every night, at between roughly 22:00-23:00, my TNAS goes unresponsive. You can hear the hard drives "grinding" constantly, and I can no longer connect to the TNAS webpage, ssh to it, or also connect via the mobile app. Also, the Plex app on my TNAS becomes unresponsive. This period of lack of response can go from several hours to sometimes the next morning. Sometimes, I have to force reboot (power cycle) the TNAS to get back into the system.

I have already disabled media indexing, yet for some reason it runs anyway.

I have no scheduled tasks configured.

And I am already at the most current version.

There's nothing in the system logs.

Any idea what on Earth is going on?

Hi.
The issue occurring at night might be related to your usage habits and file system mechanisms rather than scheduled tasks. If you are using the BTRFS file system and tend to write more data during the day, it's possible that it automatically performs check and maintenance processes when idle. This can consume significant system resources, potentially affecting other functions. It is recommended to wait until the next day for these processes to complete and then observe if the issue persists.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm also considering setting up a TerraMaster NAS and it's really helpful to read these real-world issues before diving in. Did you end up finding a stable fix for the problem? Are you using Seagate or WD drives? I've read mixed things about compatibility.

Beware of "the one post wonders". They do not necessarily represent actual experience. The op in this instance reports being "at the most current version" of TOS. What they should have said was "at the most capable version for the old, under-powered nas that I am using". (Although they do not give the model number, even in Feb '25 most TM nas were capable of running much higher versions of TOS if prepared appropriately.)
F5-221 TOS7.0.0777 - 4x4TB (Ironwolf) Traid
F2-424 TOS7.0.0777 - 2x500GB nvme (P3) Traid, 2x6TB HDD (HGST) Traid
F2-221 TOS7.0.0777 - 1x3TB Ext4, 1x4TB Btrfs
F2-425+ TOS7.0.0777 - 2x500GB nvme (P3) Traid, 2x6TB HDD (EXOS) Traid
