TOS6 Standby-Hybernation

Post by teddy »

Is there any way to actually enable standby or hibernation from TOS?

TOS only supports disk sleep mode, but nothing to reduce the device's power consumption.

In my case, when disk sleep mode is active, the power consumption is 41W, too much to theoretically do absolutely nothing.

Windows has standby and hibernation mode work correctly, I think TOS should work like this too.

Entering the Terramaster BIOS, is there any option to device's reduce consumption?

On/Off switch?
Seriously, nas are designed as "servers" which are implicitly "always on". So 41watts compared to the 100++ watts a pc based server might consume ....
F5-221 TOS7.0.0777 - 4x4TB (Ironwolf) Traid
F2-424 TOS7.0.0777 - 2x500GB nvme (P3) Traid, 2x6TB HDD (HGST) Traid
F2-221 TOS7.0.0777 - 1x3TB Ext4, 1x4TB Btrfs
F2-425+ TOS7.0.0777 - 2x500GB nvme (P3) Traid, 2x6TB HDD (EXOS) Traid

About the On/Off switch.... Booting device with12 drives in RAID is very slow, but I have no choice but to do it this way, so I was wondering if there was another way to save power.

The server can be sold as a professional server or, as in my case, used as a personal server. My PC, a NUC, consumes 10 watts in standby mode, which is more powerful than the processor in my Terramaster.

From what I've read, other "professional" servers like Qnap do use low-power standby mode so I don't undertand TOS not.

I still don't understand why Terramaster doesn't modify its TOS for customers who want certain things regarding energy savings.

Perhaps my mistake was choosing Terramaster over another brand that offers what a home user might want.

But from your response I understand that TOS has no plans to save energy either now or in the future.

I don't work for Terra-master, so don't paint me with that brush, please. I just express my personal opinion and it has no bearing on anything that TM might plan or actually do.

May I know which model you use? and how many drive you install? are you sure your drives fall into hibernation? is there any process running in your CPU and memory? As soon as all drives fall in hiberation, the power consumption should be not so high. Let's me give you an example, the F4-424 only about 10W during all disks hibernation and without task running.

Thanks for your reply.
The model is F12-450 with 12 drives of 22TB in RAID 5.
Sure not task it's running, only Webdav but same thing happens if there is no PC connected via Webdav. .
The drives are in hibernation because if I put my hand on the enclosure, there's no vibration, and when I wake it from hibernation, the motors for each drive start one after the other. (I also don't quite understand why all 12 drives can't boot at the same time; they take too long to become available, starting one at a time.)

What I think is that the motherboard, where the CPU and memory are located when there is no activity, and never goes into standby mode like any other PC.

That's why I was asking if there was a way to force this standby through the BIOS or some Linux command.

Are you referring to the T12-450? Could you please tell us the model of the HDD you are using? Even when HDDs are in sleep mode, they still consume power. If you are sure there are no obvious high CPU/RAM usage processes when the HDDs are in sleep mode, it is likely that the sleep power consumption of the HDD model you are using is higher than usual. You can see our experimental test parameters here:
https://www.terra-master.com/cn/product ... u&mid=1300
33 W (Fully loaded Seagate 4TB ST4000VN008 hard drive(s) in hibernation)

The power consumption required to wake up an HDD is very high. If multiple hard drives are woken up simultaneously, it may exceed the power supply's rated power or the motherboard's power capacity, leading to unstable voltage or even hardware damage.

Sorry, yes the model it's T12-450.

I forgot to mention that Tos is installed on an M.2 SSD, not on the hard drives.

The HDD model is Seagate ST22000NT001 , with a consumption of each disk in standby of 1.2 W. (1.2x12 = 14.4 W)

Would it be possible for the motherboard to also go into standby mode to reduce power consumption?

Sorry, there is no feature like mother board standby mode be integrated into TM NAS products. BUT the key components like CPU and memory will work on low power consumption mode as soon as the system loading keep low.

I have a problem on my F6-424 Max The device puts itself in standby and all my shares and the access interface are no longer available the only way is to press the ON/OFF button and the TOS 6 interface bootup but the device shutdowns I only have problems with this device (the disk sleep is deactivate) ...
