[Discussion] Should I enable the disk cache?

Post by Saviel99 »

Hello,

Silly question maybe, but i noticed that disk cache are disabled by default in terramaster TOS6.
I imagine that it s to improve reliability in case of power loss. However i am not concerned by such a case and data integrity is not my main concerns as I have two NAS for backup and we are talking about data that do not get moved from my computer to the NAS very often. (photos, music, etc..)
Would i see a much better performance if i enabled the cache and am i at risk of messing something else in TOS if enabled?

Thanks

Power failure can screw up both the operating system and data storage. Regardless of whether disk write cache is enabled or not, do yourself a favour and use a ups. With write cache enabled there is naturally a higher risk to contents if power fails (for whatever reason - could be a simple as another party flipping the wrong switch!) If you don't mind re-installing the o/s when that gets damaged (not IF....WHEN) then go ahead enable write cache and don't worry about anything else.

thanks for the feedback. Absolutely agrees on the UPS. Although we have not had micro power cut recently, we used to have them once a week...a tiny second where power was down but enough that all my electronics had to reboot.

Hey, two things:
1) did you find any performance improvements?
2) Is it safe to check this "enable disk write cache" option once all is setup, storage pools, volumes and generally data is already populated on disks?
