[Help] D5 only showing 5 GT/s not 40 GT/s

Post by edgley »

Figured out why its running so slow, its only connecting at USB speeds.

It is, however, connected to a TB5 port on a Mac Mini M4 - using the cable with a lightning symbol and a 3.
Have just reinstalled the driver, still showing only 5 and not 40.

Any ideas, please?

Hello! You can try to install it with back to the original power supply, data cable and see if the running speed improves.

Well, I only have the replacement PSU - can't see how that would limit the connection speed.
And I am using the original cable, I only have the one TB3 cable.

Found the most possible reason, just incase someone else ends up here for similar reasons.

What's to stop a semi-pro buying a Mac Mini instead of a Mac Studio?
Apple apparently limiting the overall capabilities of the three Thunderbolt ports.

Bottom line?
If you are using two of the TB ports to drive screens, like I am, and the third to connect to storage - the transfer speed of the storage can be reduced to USB levels.

There was talk as to why.
However, that's not why I switched to Apple.

I switched because I didn't have to know how it worked, it just worked.
I also went in, eyes open, that one pays a premium for that.

Mini sold, for £25 less that I paid.
Extra saved, Mac Studio with the more important 32GB arriving end of week.

Then it will be a speed test as RAID5
Then it will be converted to RAID0 to see how fast 5x4tb HD can actual achieve.

More importantly, I think it should be recognised at what Terramaster has achieved with this product.
Mine is nearly 5 years old and is no noisier than day one.
Also, I am about to use the same five year old chassis to give me 3x its current speed.

The big thing is this. In all that time this product has maintained a price hirer that the only other product on the market to offer affordable Thunderbolt connected RAID, OWC.

When I handed all that money over all those years ago, part of me was, hmmm, I wonder.
Now?
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Oh, and that is also allow for its very slow rebuilds.
My ten year old Synology RAID will rebuild a 4TBin 48 hours max.

The Terramaster D5 will take 7 days to rebuild a replaced 4TB.
However, I will take the peace of mind that it will rebuild, over the speed it takes.

A quick retest today and I am getting 100 MB/s Write and between 130 and 200 Read MB/s for 1GB
Or, just about pointless. Will find post I made when I first got it about speed.

My plan was to back up the RAID5 and set it up as RAID0 to respect the Macs Speed.
However, given how crap the speeds are and the lack of a User Driven Forum and I am back to believing the only option is the OWC Thunderbay range.
Then again, based on the posts on the DaVinci Resolve forum, OWC is the only option. Pretty sure I am one of the few / only Terramaster users.

Oh well, its four years old and despite the current marketing it is now no longer a product for Video Editors.
