[Help] F2-420 won't boot anymore...

Post by mbrst1100y »

G'Day,

after a power fluctuation this morning (ceiling lights dimmed briefly 1x), the NAS still showed all LEDs green..
However, device/drives not accessible on LAN...
TNAS PC comes up empty...
Explorer fails to reconnect network drive...

Powered it down (depress front button till LEDs extinguish), waited a few seconds, powered back on...
- fan spins
- HDDs (2x WD red, 1TB each) spin up and rumble for aprox 7 seconds
- power LED green
- LAN LED off
- both HDD LEDs remain red
so the thing has keeled up...

What else can be tried?
Recovery boot via USB? (Which file/s? Where to obtain?)
How and where could I purchase a new main-board? (worst case scenario, or get a new NAS anyway...)

thanx in advance!
regards

Thanx for the response...

No beep upon depressing the power button...
I also tried the 'remove CMOS battery' procedure...
Further attempted the USB boot last evening as described here: viewtopic.php?t=6433
No avail... apparently no power at both USB ports (LED on thumb-drive remains off on either)...

Guess I'm on the end of the rope there...
Spare main-board avail?

We apologize, but the F2-420 model is a product from several years ago, and we are no longer able to provide repair or replacement services, including for spare parts.

We're sorry to hear that. Based on the known issues, it seems the device is no longer usable.

Regarding the data on your HDD:
1.You can access the data on the hard drive using the mdadm & LVM tools on a Linux computer or a Linux virtual machine.
2.You can retrieve the data using some specialized hard drive tools.
3.You may consider purchasing a new TNAS to continue using it. Please note:
Since the storage format required by the system used in the new models differs from that of the old drives, the old drives cannot be used directly. You may purchase an additional HDD/SSD when buying a new model for installing TOS6. When installing TOS6, please select only the new HDD/SSD as the installation target drive.

After successfully installing TOS6, you can insert the old drive or old array and reboot to allow the NAS to recognize the storage pools and volumes on the old drive again. This generally works if you are using TOS4. If you are using TOS5, you can contact technical support to have the system adjusted for you.

Thanx for your reply!

Already eyeballing the F2-423, advertised with TOS 6 though...

Question:
since my F2-420 with TOS 4 ran 2x 1TB HDDs in RAID1, would it be feasible to first install only HDD1 into the new F2-423, do all installations and settings, once that is up and running, shut down, install HDD2 and get my data mirrored back on both drives?

Or get an F2-212 and install TOS 4; chances my 2 HDDs will run immediately on that?

TIA

The 212 device series is ARM-based, so you cannot use your drives from the ×86/×64 F2-420 in that as a simple drop-in; it's not possible to mix TOS platform architectures.

Also, the 212 device series launched with TOS 5 (ARM) and just recently a public beta of TOS 6 has been made available; TOS 4 is specifically not possible on the 212 device series.

Thanx for the info...

So the general consent: it impossible to use/insert the HDD's in/to a new NAS and have the data on avail for use...

Instead I'm required to connect the drives via adapter to my laptop, retrieve all still accessible files to "park" them somewhere...
slap the drives into the new NAS, set that up from scratch, once up and running transfer my recovered files back onto it...
a painstaking process...
driving the whole concept of "safe/reliable data storage" pretty much ad absurdum... :|

After wading through numerous posts I might have found an approach how to proceed:

viewtopic.php?t=5180&start=10

Not mentioned/unclear if removal/swap of the internal thumb-drive (holding the OS) is also required?

The USB flash drive inside the device is the boot disk of the corresponding device. You don't need to exchange it. Just use the USB flash drive boot disk that comes with the corresponding device.
