How to start with docker on nas

Post by Hausmeier »

Hello,

is there somewhere an introduction on how to get started with docker as many apps can be installed with it. I installed the docker engine app but then nothing happens. There is no button of opening it - in the app center Ican only deactivate or uninstall it. So what do I have to do to get started with the docker?

You are required to install the "Docker Manager" application from the TOS App Center. It is a highly efficient tool for managing Docker.

Ok, thank you for your answer. So I need both - the docker engine and the docker manager. And what to do next (with the docker manager)?

I also read about an app called Portainer. Is this similar to Docker manager?

Hi @Hausmeler,

You can use Docker manager (developed by Terramaster team) or Portainer (developed by deviantony). With either of these two applications yoy can manage Docker from a UI. And, of course, from the terminal.

You should keep in mind that if you use a RAID with mechanical disks and they usually go into hibernation, when using Docker they will not do so because it constantly accesses the storage (writing logs, etc.). Some other services also cause the disks not to go into hibernation.

Here I explain a little more about my case with this: viewtopic.php?p=42042#p42042

Here you have a few step by step guides specific for TM NAS to offer you a start view. Some guides have Portainer and some have Docker Manager as a frontend to deploy the containers. More guides will be added with Terramaster Docker Manager as a deployment app.

Ok, thanks for the Information. For the Apps I use an m.2, the mechanical disks are for the data themselves.
So as you seid I can use both - the docker manager or portainer. But I still need the docker engine nevertheless?

P.S. Thanks for the tutorial. I'll scan it and try to follow the steps.
