How long should I wait for Configuration after adding a drive?

Post by engineerairborne »

I recently purchased a F4-212 4 Bay, I am running TOS 5.1.73. For the longest time I have been running PLEX on a very old Windows server with about 10 HDD no RAID. I decided after a drive went out that it was time to make a change. So I purchased a low end Tarramaster NAS with the intention of build it out with my largest drives. Because I did not want to lose data I started with some smaller drives and things have been going well.

Started with a 2Tb and 4TB drive. Configuration took a while but everything went smooth, copied over some data. Added another 4TB drive everything went smooth and copied over more data. Swapped out the 2TB drive with an 8TB drive because I wanted to test the rebuild ability of the TRAID before going to far down this road everything went great took about 24hours. Copied more data over to clear off another drive, then added that drive to the 4th slot a 12TB. And before you ask these are all normal HDD not NAS or anything special, I know they are not made for this, but it is what I have. Everything was going fine until about 26 hours into adding this drive and it is not done. So I went to check on it and at first I could not even find the NAS in the desktop tool, so I connected via a browser, took forever to connect, but go into it, and brought up the Storage Pool in the configuration. After about 10 minutes it came up and says Configuring 53.56 this was 10PM last night, so great I will let it run and check in the morning. this morning it is at 54.04 at 7AM.

So I get that there is an expectation of long times for adding drives, and data recovery and I am fine with that. My question is do I continue to wait for this, or what are my options? All 4 drives show healthy, there are no errors I can find in any logs, it just seems to be taking for every. I did not test the 12TB drive I suppose there could be an issue with it, but I can't test it until it is completed the configuration.

Hello, if possible, check the disk activity lights on the NAS or any monitoring tools available in TOS. This can help you determine if the system is actively working on the configuration or if it's stalled.
