Cannot see TNAS wirelessly

Post by sdclee »

Hi all.
I can see my TNAS via an ethernet switch from my iMac Pro but cannot see it from my MacBook Pro (which only has wireless, no ethernet port).
I felt sure I'd been able to see the TNAS from my MBP in the past before I moved house.
Two questions:
1) what is required to configure a wifi dongle for use via the USB port of the 220?
2) how can I reset the admin password to access the TNAS (http://tnas.local) which I can see using my iMac Pro?
Many thanks in advance.

Do you have a working wifi access point on your network. (I presume you do, but need to ask ;) ) Are you connecting your MacBook to your network on the same segment (eg 192.168.xxx.yyy)? Is you nas on the same segment?

Thanks for the reply.
I have an access port on my n/w. I am also on the same n/w segment (192.168.1.x).

You can install the TNAS PC application on your MacBook Pro to see if you can find your TNAS.

Thanks for the reply. I can see it in the App and can access it via an SMB connection in finder but cannot ping it using the wired connection (everything else wired is ok) and my MacBook Pro (which doesn't have ethernet) does NOT see the TNAS in its finder or network.
I'm still trying to figure out what's wrong so appreciate any more suggestions.

Network isolation policies enforced either on your access point and/or macbook?? I have some netgear ap's that can be setup so that the wireless device(s) cannot see the wired device(s). (or by default depending on the choice of wifi transmitter used - multiple built-in radio circuits & frequencies).

"Network isolation policies enforced either on your access point and/or MacBook"

That sounds interesting but the only this difference between how it was setup in my last location and here, is my ISP.
I have had them thoroughly check the router and the Tenda Nova mesh nodes but it seems logical to me (as I haven't changed anything to do with networking on my Apple products, linux box or NAS) that the issue must lie in the router/mesh configuration.

I'll go back to them for a third look.

Thanks.

Ok, in collaboration with my ISP, I've arrived at the conclusion, which is (in part) that the ethernet ports on the Tenda Nova units might not be equipped to handle routing in the way I expected.
Each of the 3 TN units has two ethernet ports (one described as wan/lan and the other as wan/lan with multiplex options, though the manual doesn't state anything else about multiplex options).
I had an 8port switch plugged into one of the ethernet ports of one of the secondary TN nodes.
Anything plugged into the switch could only "see" other devices plugged into the same switch using ethernet cables.
Even though *all* devices are on the same subnet (192.168.1.x) nothing passed through the TN node via the switch, so for example I had:

[TN#1]<-- Eth - ISP router -->
[TN#2] Satellite Node
[TN#3] Satellite Node <--- ethernet ---> [8port switch]<--- iMac Pro --- + linux box + NAS drive (each of these 3 could see each other but nothing via the TN)

It turned out most recently (half an hour before posting this) that TN#3, despite having a solid blue light, was actually offline to the network.
Having moved the node and rebooted it I was then able to add a single device to it, e.g.
[TN#3] Satellite Node <--- ethernet ---> SNOM IP Phone

So now I have that on one node and the NAS drive on another:
[TN#2] Satellite Node <--- ethernet ---> NAS

All past attempts appear to indicate that the TN nodes cannot accommodate a switch (in my case a dumb 8port dLink switch).
I can't find any documentation to show if that is really case but for now I have solved some of the problem.

Tomorrow I'll untangle the pile of wires and plugs that I've pulled out and see if the 8port switch can be reintroduced now that I know the TN node #3 is really working and online.
