What to expect when increasing a TRAID volume?

Post by mrslother »

I have a U4-423 NAS running TOS6 using TRAID across 4 12T drives. Today I selected one of the 2 volumes and increased its size by several terrabytes (from 16T to 24T). The system sucked up RAM memory and came to a crawl. After several minutes the NAS is non-responsive; neither web UX, mobile app, SMB access, nor SSH will work. Ping works, though.

On the physical device I can see all 4 drive lights on and flickering a bit.
Is this normal and expected? If so, how long should I wait for this process to complete?

The last image of the web UX I saw before it became unresponsive was this:

...so, the system was unresponsive for hours. I finally powered it down (hold power button for 10+ seconds).
Upon boot the web page simply states "Loading..., please wait!"
I can SSH in but my account settings (including .ssh dir with authorized_keys file) is missing.
No volumes mounted. I see /Volume1 and /Volume2, but nothing in them.

Journal just repeats:

Code: Select all

Dec 02 20:05:16 NAS smbd[8136]: [2024/12/02 20:05:16.980190, 0] ../../source3/smbd/service.c:799(make_connection_snum)
Dec 02 20:05:16 NAS smbd[8136]: make_connection_snum: canonicalize_connect_path failed for service Media, path /Volume2/Media
There have been so many problems with this system since day 1. The hardware seems nice but the TOS6 is so very not ready for prime time. Very beta-ish. I am thinking of returning the device to Amazon and getting a Synology.

Can somebody talk me off the ledge?

It is not possible to guess the possible causes and exactly what is happening based only on the information available so far.
Could you please generate and download a log report in TOS > Technical Support > Report Issues and send it to our technical support email address and we will analyze it. This will give us an idea of what's going on that can't be seen on some pages.
If you can't send it because it's too large, you can share it to the tech support email address using the web share link.
To contact our team, please send email to following addresses, remember to replace (at) with @:

Technical team: support(at)terra-master.com(for technical support)
Service team: service(at)terra-master.com(for purchasing, return, replacement, RMA service)

Thank you, Eric. After 12 hours of non responsiveness (no web access, no SMB access, extremely slow SSH, HD LEDs fully lit) the system responded came back online. Full web UX, quick responsiveness, volumes intact. However the volume I increased in size (which led to all of this) was the same; it had not increased.

So I tried increasing it again and it was completed in just seconds.

This answers my original question of what to expect. In the web UX this should be made clear that increasing volume size may cause the system to go offline while it does its thing. My team had serious concerns that we had just lost our data and without any such notification panic ensued.

I am now going to spot check volume integrity.

I will follow up with logs and support if there are further issues.

Can I downgrade 6.0.555 back to 6.0.535? That was the last known good for me. I read that 6.0.530 modified root file system in a way that you cannot downgrade. Is this true?

Yes,you can continue to use TOS 6.0.535 by reinstalling, but you cannot roll back to the 5.1 series or 6.0 beta series releases.
