performance of vbox guests terriable

Post by clonea1 »

my windows guests (i have not tried any other os) are running AWFULL. the nas is at idle drives are synced resource monitor in tos shows the drives putting out almost no throughput. however in the windows guest os (4vcpu, 6GB ram) the machines are insanely slow (even with only 1 guest powered on) what i am seeing is that the memory is 45% so that is good, cpu is 4-6% so no problems on that. but what sticks out is that the disk active time is basically 100% active time no matter how small the task is.

all windows updates have been completed, this box has been up and idling for days now. i have installed the vbox companion drivers and that made no change. even basic tasks like downloading a file that file can only come down at like 35kb/s. 3MB/s read or write operations spike out disk active time to 100%.

Thank you for your feedback. What version of Windows is running on VBox? We will verify the situation you mentioned in the laboratory.

6.0.531-00150

let me know what you want me to gather, i gave up for a little bit i have the guest powered down for the time being will probably resume testing sunday/monday.

my objective was to shut down my i7-2600k server that is sucking down electricity, the f6-424 max was to replace the roll of that server being storage as well as hypervisor for 3-4 guests

with the current testing even just the one guest and what appears to be a I/O issue making it suspect as to if i can transitions loads onto this.

the f6 is 6x WD Red Pro 18TB (WDC WD181KFGX-68AFPN0) in TRAID+, no NVME at present but these drives should be more then enough to run a few guests.

also for context i took the print screen several hours after the machine finished a synchronization and was in a fully idle state as you can see from the flat lines. you can also see that the load are almost nothing for this guest on the f6424max, and inside the guest you can see the things running are almost nothing with almost no demand to the disk yet its 100% active. this is leading to a guest that is very un responsive/unstable/can not maintain connection
