TOS 6 for F4-424 Pro

Post by McCoder67 »

I just received my new F4-424 Pro that i bought during the Amazon Prime Days , and so far i'm very pleased with it

i am however at bit disappointed that it comes with TOS 5 and not TOS 6 , especially since the graphics at the topic of this forum states "2024 New Product Lineup All powered by TOS 6" and i thought that the F4-424 Pro was part of the 2024 new product lineup since it launched on January 31st 2024.

I have read that TOS 6 allow mounting drives directly, meaning that moving data would just be a matter of mounting an old drive and copying its content to my new RAID volume.

Now , as i understand it, i must RSync that data from my old Synology NAS through the network, which will not only be a slow process, it will probably bog down my LAN

If your Synology NAS has dual LAN, you could statically set a private address on the second one, statically set a similar private address on the second LAN on your 424 Pro & connect both to a switch (just the two devices, no connection to your network or the Internet) & rsync or scp the data that way so it doesn't impact your network.

An upgrade package from TOS5 to TOS6 will be released in the near future, so stay tuned. crisisacting's mentioned method is feasible and worth a try.

Thanks :)

i actually managed to get it working by SSH'ing to the NAS and mounting the first drive using the mount command , i expect the second drive will be the same

so i'm good for now, except that i got a prebuilt NAS to avoid all the tricky linux commands :D

Linux commands are not tricky, just .............obscure :?: made worse by @TM's methods of obfuscating the process to 'protect' the 'unwise' ;)

i've been programming for 47 years, including software monitoring reactors at nuclear plants, and games written in assembler, but linux and its commands still scare the living daylight out of me :D
