Baffled! Simplest backup required... How?

Post by Odbod »

Hi.

I have a F5-221 running TNAS 5.0.176
All the backup apps I have skimmed over for this device seem way too complicated and can not find a way to do this!

A is my F5-221
B is any other available storage on my home network

No storage on B requires any password or account setup to access.

I want to be able to run a "something" on A that will copy anything on B to A or vice versa.
What is a simple "something" to do this?

If A was a windows device I woud just schedule batch files to run whenever.

At the moment everything can be done from within windows 10 on any connected PC or infact any mobile too.

Unfortunately doing it this way is very innefficient slowing everything down especially with a Wifi Connection.

Any ideas or pointers gladly received. Thanking you in advance.

My 'simple' is 3rd party tools on Windows desktop. Easus TODO backup. Does most of the heavy lifting and can be left to run in the background even if it takes a little time. I backup my windows devices to nas and caan do nas <--> nas if I need to or selective shared folders from nas back to selected device(s).
F5-221 TOS7.0.0777 - 4x4TB (Ironwolf) Traid
F2-424 TOS7.0.0777 - 2x500GB nvme (P3) Traid, 2x6TB HDD (HGST) Traid
F2-221 TOS7.0.0777 - 1x3TB Ext4, 1x4TB Btrfs

For easy backups you can also try between your F5-221 and other network storage, use Rsync for automatic syncing or the built-in TNAS apps. You can also manually transfer files over the network to avoid slowdowns.

On the OP's current setup, Rsync might not be a good option. There were issues relating to application of dating information in the copied files. This was due to the built-in Rsync functions not using the 'archive' setting so all copied files had the create & Modify dates set to time of transfer. This has been corrected in later Tos6 versions but I'm not certain if it was applied to any of the TOS5 versions.

On the other hand, even Windows can be set up as an Rsync client to copy to nas as Rsync server. (I have not tried it.) But I don't think it works the other way around.

The advantage of (most) 3rd party tools is that it is an easier interface to work with and you have options for levels of compression and encryption if you want/need them.

I am no expert after a few hours but I can not see anyway to get the F5-221 to do the work with this Easus TODO it all relies on the pC to copy from A to B?

Thankyou. Rsync is rather complicated its asking for accounts and ports and say stuff about SSH being activated on the remote server etc etc etc. Has to be a simpler way. I do not need accounts apart from the F5-221 one or as far as I can see I shouldn't. All the data is available on the Network anonymously no accounts and passwords required. I am thinking I may have to learn scripting on this machine or run a VM running windows just to get Xcopy to schedule Lol, if it would be able to?

Thankyou. No I do not need Encryption or Compression, just a straightforwad copy a *.* to b*.* sort of command to run on the F5-221 with maybe a few conditions thrown if about attributes and dates. So easy on my laptop but seems to be not so on this TOS "desktop".

Sorry; never said it would. Yes it does all the work on the pc. The NAS is, literally just the storage device.

Thankyou for the tip on the Easus TODO It looks like it can do lots on my PC's and will certainly be a help. I have Acronis software and when it works its fine but it seems to get confused very easily, Might swap over to Easus.
