UPS with USB-only connectivity?

How do I get my USB-connectivity UPS to talk to my TNAS box?

(there's apparently an option to buy a $300 Remote Management card for the UPS... but that's insane.)

I don't want any sophisticated transactions here... if the power goes out, I want the TNAS to shut down cleanly.

I think all Tnas devices support USB based data coms. Plug in the usb cable from the ups and the tnas will (normally) recognise it. The downside of Tnas is that it only supports network connections with other Tnas devices (on the surface). It would be "nice" if it worked, simply, with other network power monitoring systems/servers/clients.
