D4-320 problem with 8tb disk in DAS

Post by Spinup »

I have just purchased a D4-320 DAS. I have tried to install a Seagate 8tb drive. I have initialised it as usual using GPT. In a single docking station it shows as normal with a drive letter. I put in the DAS and it does not show properly but as two partitions, the first 2048 gb (Healthy GPT Protected Partition) and the second 5404 gb (Unallocated). I do not understand this as I have three 4 tb drives showing normally with 3725 gb Healthy. What have I done wrong as I understand the DAS can cope with 8tb drives?

You need to initialize the hard drive in the DAS instead of initializing it in another device and then putting it back in the DAS.

Thanks for your help. I tried initialising it in the DAS but it never appeared so did it externally. It then shows fine on my computer but not once in the DAS. This problem had not occurred with three 4tb drives, which work fine, so is it because of the additional disk size? How can I reinitialise a disk? Also the drive lights on the D4-320 can only be seen in very low light. Is this normal? Not sure I have made the right decision with this kit.

I believe the led indicators on later equipment are quite dim. { :?: Because people complained about the "flashing lights" :?: }

I have solved my problem so others may be interested in the solution. For some reason on installing the 8tb drive in my D4-320, it changed the single partition into two partitions, the first 2048 gb (Healthy GPT Protected Partition) and the second 5404 gb (Unallocated). Rather than try to sort this in disk management, I concentrated on what the GPT Protected Partition is. I had never seen this before but find the disk cannot be partitioned or formatted in this state. One has to use diskpart and having listed and selected the relevant disk one simply enters 'clean', which cleans this partition from the disk. Once done I found I could then initialise the disk in the DAS (thank you TMwuu). This all worked and my D4-320 now reflects the 8tb drive. Phew....!
