Normal? LAN LED constantly nervously blinking

Post by AlterSchwede62 »

Hello

Since two days I have my F4-423 NAS in use, and from the beginning on after the startup of the NAS the LAN LED is constantly nervously blinking. During the start not, but as soon as it is started it blinks... until I shut the NAS down.

Is that normal?
If yes, why dont you set a constantly glowing LED as normal, instead of a completely irritating blinking LED as a normal state?

Thank you.

I think you will find the led is a reflection of network activity. Most network adapters have an activity light of some sort and I think a lot of people appreciate knowing that the device is active.

If you don't like it (and each to their own), you could try masking tape. ;)

No, it is not, that I do not want to know, that or what is happening on the network adapter.
And no, it is not the reflection of activity of the network adapter, it is just a very fast blinking, that starts just after the NAS booted up an is online.

It is the way, how this status of "Online" is programmed.
Normally constantly and fast blinking LEDs or other lights indicate danger, troubles or problems, and not that everything is o.k.

I have so many electrical products with point LED lights in my household and non of them is fast blinking, when everything is o.k.
What do you think it would look like in my household, if every device would blink, as a sign that everything is o.k.
Seriously, this standardly blinking LED for indicating that all is good, is everything but usual. It is a faulty programming.

If you know what I mean... ;)

We understand your expectation of being able to read and retrieve various signals through LED network indicator lights. The flashing of your F4-423‘s LED network indicator light only indicates a successful network connection status.

Really?

Well, now I know, that this behaviour seems to be wanted.
However I do not understand this. This LED would fast blink 24h a day if someone would have his NAS 24h a day online. :?
You also could have programmed a normal constantly glowing LED, when its online and everything would be calm.

Only if something is wrong, it should blink.

I found several post according to blinking LEDs on NAS, and everybody was highly irritated... as me too.

i have same issue on brand new 423.
both indicators - back and front panel. green light are blinking.
that is really annoying.

moreover ! system occasionally freezes - disconnected or shuts down while LAN lights are blinking.
that also happens when i try to shut down from web interface (TOS6),
LAN starts blinking and NAS continue to do something without connection and shutting down.

Perhaps you could post a video clip of how your LAN led flashes. Mine does flash, but it is more akin to morse code than constant. ie
----blink,blink,blink------blink,blink-----blink,blink,blink,blink-----etc. So random, it could not be considered 'programmed' imo.

I believe it just depends on the model and how TerraMaster has implemented the network connection indicator.

I have two NAS's - an F5-221 and a F4-220. On the F5-221 the network light is constantly blinking. On the F4-220 the network light is always on steady.
F5-221 with 4x5TB drives in Raid 5 (Plex Media Server, TOS 4.2.44)
F4-220 with 2x8TB, 1x6TB in JBOD (Docker, PiHole, Uptime-Kuma, tnfsd-x64, TOS 5.1.145)

I would too say, that it depends on when and how it is connected.
Sometimes my front LAN LEDs nearly seem to be constantly on and the other day or restart it blinks fast and nervously. :?
However on my NAS it hasnt anything to do with with the traffic as indicator. It blinks at the same moment, it has network connection.
