My TerraMaster F2-210 NAS is no more...

Post by Dirk1972 »

Hello all,

I had the misfortune of my F2-210 NAS reaching a total existence failure a couple of days ago. Although the hardware is dead and now lying in a skip, I did manage to salvage the two drives out of it, a pair of 1TB WD Red WD10EFRX NAS drives in a RAID 1 configuration.

I had a USB backup set up, but it only has at most, a 40% total backup amount on it. I stupidly thought, well i have two drives with identical copies of the data, it should be really straightforward to just plug-in the drive, connect it up via USB and get the data that way - or at least that is what I thought. I soon panicked when I realised that the disks are encrypted using LVM2 (it seems) and although I have managed to see directory contents after following the many (and mostly not totally workable) "solutions" out there on the world wide web, when I tried to copy any of the files it wouldn't let me - all I see is various errors related to bad superblocks and the like.

So I think you may have worked out where this is going - I really need to access all the data and copy it off, but as of now i cannot access any of it. Does someone know of a foolproof and straightforward way of getting access to my own data without the process involving potentially damaging workarounds involving mdadm settings and buggering about with disk sectors? I used to be a Linux PC guy but have since switched to a Mac, but I can use Linux if that works out better. I do not have any Windows-based machines anywhere.

Thank you to everyone in advance - I am very close to having to resort to a commerical app, "R-Studio" to try and fix it for me - but the wait will be 17 hours according to their software!

Cheers,

/Mat.

It seems that you have finally found a way to access the disk on MAC, and I hope everything goes smoothly. If you still find it difficult to read data in the end, you can consider purchasing our brand new F2-212 device, inserting your existing two disks and booting them directly to easily read data. Moreover, we can now offer more favorable discounts.
