Can't start TOS 5.1 without HDD?

Post by Sparker »

I initialized my F4-423 with 4 x 1TB for a test, but now I want to replace all 4 1TB drives with 1x 16TB HDD (eventually it will be 3x 16TB) will I have to reinitialize from scratch or will I be able to login to TOS 5.1 and simply setup the new TRAID on the 16TB disk?

I am guessing that part of TOS 5.1 is saved in the 4x1TB TRAID storage pool?

I don't mind starting again, but I just want to confirm if that's what will be needed.

Hello, it is recommended that you back up the previous data first, and then use the new hard disk to install the system.

Thanks for the reply but I don't need to save any data on any of the four 1TB disks. What I am asking is if when I remove all the HDDs I will have to setup TOS 5.1 from scratch again.

I plan to add a Intel 660p NVMe and install TOS 5.1 on that, and then add a second NVMe for HDD cache. Is that possible?

Just to update, I was prompted to reinitialize after I removed all 4 1 TB drives. I installed TOS 5.1 on a 1 TB SSD and also setup Volume 1 on it (where I plan to install apps) a second 1 TB drive acts as SSD cache (in Balanced mode) for the 16 TB HDD I added and setup in TRAID.

Now the long process of moving 11.3 TB over my 1 GbE LAN from one (Synology) NAS to the other (F4-423).

Last night it took almost 9 hours to move 2.43 TB so it's looking like 5 nights.

Editing storage does not affect the TOS system, you can ignore it.
If you only installed TOS5 on M.2 at the beginning, you'd better reinstall TOS5 after completing the storage change so that all disks can have system and boot partitions.

Nah, I think it sucks that the whole system is not accessible if all of the HDDs are removed. IMO the HDDs should only serve for data. What is the point of having an internal USB stick and allowing to install TOS 5.1 to SSD if you are now saying the boot partitions must also be on the HDDs?

Everything can fail, but I can clone the SSD (and save it in the cloud) and restore that to a replacement if the SSD fails.

It will boot from HDD by default, if you need to boot only from M.2, you may need to modify the boot order.
